The first quarter of 2022 is well underway with the winter season almost over. While 2022 has already proven to be another difficult year for many, it has produced plenty of interesting new wines and wine-industry developments. In turn, below are 10 product recommendations and/or interesting vineyard-related news items that are keeping things interesting for wine enthusiasts.
Corvo is a celebrated Sicilian wine produced in Casteldaccia, near Palermo. Its name is derived from a legend that a boistrous crow — “corvo” in Italian — was pestering the vineyard workers. The Corvo Irmana Grillo is an ideal white wine if you prefer dry wines. With aromas of citrus and the Mediterranean Sea, this wine is made from hand-picked, well-ripened grapes. Meanwhile, the Corvo Irmana Frappato carries light floral and red berry aromas, and is said to pair well with pork, linguine and cherry tomatoes alike.
The 2018 Chardonnay from Knotty Vines Winery teases peach and green apple with each sip, alongside acidic tropical flavors. It finishes with a touch of rich and creamy vanilla. The acclaimed Knotty Vines has excellent sister brands in Rodney Strong, Davis Bynum, Upshot and RWC.
The elegant and efficacious ETTORE 2018 Merlot Zero — carrying a suggested retail price of $35.00 per bottle — is an organic red wine from Mendocino County, California. With its distinctive ruby-red color, it presents a delicate and fascinating bouquet revealing nuances of both blueberries and wild strawberries. Altogether, ETTORE Merlot Zero is a clean, dense wine of medium intensity with a light tannin.

19 Crimes recently added a new face to its lineup of boundary pushing and culture molding characters: the iconic Martha Stewart. As 19 Crimes tells the true story of heroes who overcome adversity, this continues with Stewart, a self-made icon who turned her passion into a thriving business empire that has made her a household name around the world. Stewart’s new wine breaks the mold not only as 19 Crimes’ first California Chardonnay, but also as a disruptor in the category. She worked side by side with 19 Crimes to create a wine that breaks preconceived notions of California Chardonnay, and Martha’s Chard joins 2 previous California launches from 19 Crimes partner Snoop Dogg, 19 Crimes Snoop Cali Red and Rosé.
Per John Wardley, Treasury Wine Estates Vice President Brand Marketing for the Americas: “The release of 19 Crimes Martha’s Chard comes as the brand has experienced explosive growth, delivering the Number 1 US Wine Innovations in both 2020 and 2021 for our first California wines with global icon, Snoop Dogg. Just like her creative collaborator and friend Snoop, Martha Stewart also embodies the spirit of 19 Crimes – disruption and culture creation. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome another absolute icon of modern American culture to the 19 Crimes family.”
Hahn SLH Chardonnay is a full-bodied chardonnay featuring a silky, smooth mouthfeel. Carrying a suggested retail price of $25.00, the Hahn SLH Chardonnay has notes of tropical flavors of pineapple, lemon and pear. It ought to pair deliciously with crispy mozzarella sticks, shrimp cocktail, and/or mini crab cakes.

Kim and Erica Crawford, founders of Loveblock Wines, have been working in wine for most of their lives. In 2004, Erica came across a wild piece of land in New Zealand’s Central Otago region. At first she fell in love with the view, but before long she yearned to own and care for this very special place, to restore it, to balance the soil — and to strive to make the best wine possible. To do this, she hired the best winemaker she knew – her husband, veteran winemaker, Kim Crawford, and shortly thereafter, Loveblock was born.
Loveblock Pinot Noir is grown on a 20 acre patch of a former paddock in southern Central Otago, as affectionately named “Someone’s Darling” vineyard. Dry tannins and hints of cigar help to make the 2020 Pinot Noir a versatile wine, as notably pairable with turkey, salmon, lamb and beef alike.
The Edna Valley is arguably the coolest growing region in all of California, and known to grow there is Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir, Edna Valley 2018. The Firepeak vineyard blocks are defined by extinct volcanoes found in the area, thus creating unique soils. Aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, cinnamon and tobacco burst from the glass of this beautifully balanced Pinot Noir. Ideal for the cool nights when you are warming up in front of a fire, this one carries a suggested retail price of $30.00.
Last but definitely not least… Bread & Butter’s latest Merlot is intended for “easy drinking.” A beautifully-balanced and approachable Merlot, it carries notes of dark plum and sweet baking spices. A rich and decadent wine that aims to be satisfying from start to finish, this one has a suggested retail price of $15.00 and ought to pair well with buffalo wings with chunky blue cheese dip, loaded potato skins, and/or pulled barbeque pork sliders.
