LA Legend Myka 9 Drops ‘A New Suspiria (Deluxe Edition)’ with Jade Rivers

We spend so much time talking about the rightfully celebrated East Coast legends of Hip Hop, especially now that a silly person has moronically fixed their face to denigrate them, that I felt the need to mention a West Coast luminary who for decades has also represented the culture in no uncertain terms. Myka 9 is an LA Hip Hop hero and co-founder of the legendary Freestyle Fellowship, which has been an elite collective holding down the culture in Los Angeles. Absolutely no disrespect to ANY other collective but as a fan of the LA Underground, who’s experienced The Good Life Cafe and Project Blowed gatherings, witnessing some of the coldest to do it like Myka and Medusa, they are my examples. And no one could ever forget witnessing Global Phlowtations do their thing live as well.

Fun Fact: Myka 9 put pen to pad as the ghostwriter on the Rappinstine song “Scream” on N.W.A.‘s debut album N.W.A. and the Posse in 1987.

Gray and grizzled, Myka 9 is STILL on the best active MCs in the game list in my opinion. His latest release A New Suspiria (Deluxe Edition) with Jade Rivers, is one of the most full-bodied and nuanced Hip Hop releases I’ve had the pleasure of listening to this year. From the vinyl crackle and subdued scratches, the salute to boom bap, and that sax play, this is a rich offering that should not slip through the cracks. EVERYTHING is served properly in this release, lyrical missiles, sonics, arrangement…everything. It would be safe to say that Myka 9 is THE foundational linchpin in regards to LA Hip Hop and ain’t *ish “dusty” about this cat…GTFOH with that.

Nineteen solid gems of Hip Hop is what A New Suspiria (Deluxe Edition) brings to the fabric of music and a deliberate showcase of salutes to the sounds of other artists from outside the genre who lent their touch to it courtesy of sampling, etc.

Beyond the music, Myka 9 is an author as well, his new book My Kaleidoscope features lyrics for 69 songs and 20 photos by Brian “B+” Cross & more. It’s a detailed oral history, based on 20 hours of exclusive interviews with Myka 9 & many more, covering his entire career from 1980s b-boy battles to the legendary Good Life and Project Blowed underground hip hop scenes.
