Khnum “Stic” Ibomu On His New Book “The 5 Principles,” Future Plans For Dead Prez & More

Khnum “Stic” Ibomu — widely-known as Stic from the legendary hip hop group Dead Prez — is an award-winning hip-hop artist and producer. Dubbed “the father of fit hop,” Stic arguably pioneered the “fit hop” music genre with his groundbreaking albums The Workout and Workout II. Hip-hop aside, Stic is also a certified long distance running coach, founder of RBG Fit Club and an Adjunct professor at The Clive Davis Institute at NYU. In turn, his music and lifestyle have inspired millions around the world.
However, Stic was not always the people’s champ of healthy living in hip-hop. As a young aspiring rapper on the rise in the late 1990s, Stic was no stranger to self-destructive lifestyle habits of excessive drinking, abusing weed, making poor dietary choices, and enduring many stressful days and sleepless nights. Ultimately his health paid the price and he was diagnosed with gout. The 5 Principles: A Revolutionary Path To Health, Inner Wealth, And Knowledge Of Self is the new book from Khnum “Stic” Ibomu, as due out on October 18, 2022 via Balance/Hachette. “The 5 P’s” is intended to be a new code for wellness, a customizable roadmap for enjoying the discipline of healthy living. Written in Stic’s native tongue — a blend of Ebonics, Florida twang, a bit of country and some Brooklyn slang — The 5 Principles aims to take readers through Stic’s decades-long journey to health and well-being with an approach that happens to be simultaneously modern, non-preachy, proactive and integrative.
Last month, I had the pleasure of speaking with Stic via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond The 5 Principles, we talked about his multi-faceted career, Dead Prez’s work on the Loud Rocks compilation and what is coming up for him professionally. More on Stic can be found here, here and here.
