In this Live Session, I catch up with one of the heroes of West Coast Hip Hop, the inimitable Myka 9. One of the key elders of the West Coast scene and STILL killing the game, Myka 9 chops it up with me on the impact of the Cali Hip Hop movements on the overall fabric of the global culture, respecting the infrastructure built by those that came before and how the underground movement of LA helped buttress the overall musical communities of the coast. We also got to discuss his penchant for comingling Jazz with his style and how, as I called him, it makes him the Miles Davis of our culture, which made him chuckle.
Most importantly to me personally, stepping outside of my journalistic neutrality for a bit, I listened to him talk about the amazingly colorful evolution of the underground scene that was headquartered in the world-famous Leimert Park section, specifically The Good Life Cafe, the birthplace of the likes of Freestyle Fellowship, Global Phlowtations Artist Committee, Project Blowed, and more. The history lessons from this teacher and master of the craft are amazing…This is my #1 favorite conversation on West Coast Hip Hop for the entire of 2022…hands down. Tune In!!!
