Ohio Seizes the Day on the Sports Betting Boom

Ohio has been tortoise-like in opening up its doors to public gambling. After all, the first casino was only opened a decade ago. For a state that has three cities contributing to professional sports teams, it has been a long road to joining that industry’s betting boom in the United States. It is almost ready to catch fire though after Governor Mike DeWine officially signed Ohio sports wagering into law in December 2021.

Ohio’s rich heritage of sports teams

Ohio is the home of two NFL and MLB franchises and has a rich heritage of major teams and venues. However, it is only in the last year that the groundwork has been laid to open up the sportsbook library. While surrounding states like Indiana, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania have been able to place a wager on the big leagues, the Birthplace of Aviation has taken the long-haul route.

It was the run of the Cincinnati Bengals culminating in February’spastedGraphic_1.png Super Bowl which has been a significant eye-opener to the worth of the industry. Legal sports betting in the United States has grown over eleven-fold from 2018 in the last four years. It certainly caught the eye of The Ohio State Legislature when their local team was at the business end of America’s biggest sporting event before narrowly losing to the Los Angeles Rams.pastedGraphic_1.png

Ohio Sports betting launch in time for the climax of the NFL

If there is one thing that marks out the Mother of Presidents, it is the ability to appreciate successful change and the effect that brings. Liverpool and Manchester United supporters who went 30 and 41 years respectively without a title had it relatively easy. In contrast, Cleveland was starved for more than half a century before its very own colossus, LeBron James, led the Cavaliers to their first NBA Finals title.

The official launch date might not coincide with a second title but will make it in time for the climax of the NFL regular season as well as several college football bowl games including the FBS College Playoff. Ohio bettors will be able to place wagers online by using a sportsbook with promotional offers like the BetRivers Ohio bonus code as the state becomes the 31st in the country to roll out sports wagering.

Largest launch of sports gaming in the United States

For a state that has so many big amusement parks and is the location for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there’s almost a captive audience for the big day on January 1. Bettors can hit the ground running with many licensed operators already in place. The self-proclaimed ‘roller coaster capital of the world’ is now ready to become part of what is being seen as one of the largest launches of sports betting in the United States.

In just over ten years, Ohio has changed from casino-free to potentially one of the most open markets for sports betting in what promises to be a wide-eyed change of scenery for the Buckeye State.
