Julian Kerins’ “In Billowing Skies,” Live Performance Emanates a Deep Reflection

Julian Kerins is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter from New York best known for his 8+ octave range and performances at festivals with artists such as Machine Gun Kelly, Greta Van Fleet, and Fall Out Boy. One of his latest live tracks on Spotify, “In Billowing Skies,” speaks to a mood that is particularly common in a lot of pop music but here expressed with Julian’s own characteristically deep and melancholy timbre. The live version of the track brings out a stripped-down mood particularly suggestive of an end-of-night coffee shop setting or frame of mind.

Focusing lyrically on a love that perhaps once was but is now not requited, the structure of the song follows the theme as it moves tantalizingly to and from choruses and verses, maintaining a strong sense of movement but never fully resolving. With an opening that is full and opening, the song drags you in only to hold you in a place of reflection and sinking amusement at a piece that is vulnerable, angry, and accepting. The song seems to tell a story of another’s dismissiveness exploring a feeling of inadequacy that one experiences from not being heard or seen by another. Following his 2020 album, “To Solemn Maia,” Kerins’ “In Billowing Skies” continues the strongest parts of his songwriting by focusing on expressing the specific and raw feelings associated with common experiences people have in relationships or in physical or mental health. Kerins makes use of his unique voice to create soundscapes that entrance the listener and in doing so is able to express things that written or spoken words alone cannot.

“In Billowing Skies” is part of a collection of tracks Julian has created for placement on TV and movies; he recently signed a publishing and licensing deal contract that will enable Netflix and other streaming services and media companies to sync his music. In a recent Instagram post, Julian shared that he is currently working with film and TV music director Marc Jackson to make the song more suitable for film and TV.

Considering how much atmosphere you can feel just listening to the song, it is not surprising someone would want to start putting Kerins’ music on the big screen. My only question is how this didn’t happen sooner.
