National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum Unveils Second HBCU Bobblehead Series

16 Additional Historically Black Colleges and Universities Featured in Expanded National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum Bobblehead Series

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum announced the release of its second HBCU Bobblehead Series, featuring officially licensed bobbleheads for 16 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This series follows the successful launch of the first HBCU Bobblehead Series earlier this year. The release coincides with the beginning of the 2023-24 school year.

Expanding the Collection

The second series includes an impressive roster of schools: Albany State University Rams, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Wolves, Clark Atlanta University Panthers, Coppin State University Eagles, Elizabeth City State University Vikings, Fayetteville State University Broncos, Florida A&M University Rattlers, Morehouse College Maroon Tigers, North Carolina A&T University Aggies, Prairie View A&M University Panthers, South Carolina State University Bulldogs, Southern University Jaguars, Virginia State University Trojans, and Winston-Salem State University Rams. Notably, the bobbleheads for Florida A&M University and North Carolina A&T University in Series 2 feature the school’s female mascots.

Honoring the Legacy

The first series, released in February, featured bobbleheads for the following HBCUs: Alabama A&M University Bulldogs, Alabama State University Hornets, Delaware State University Hornets, Florida A&M University Rattlers, Fayetteville State University Broncos, Grambling State University Tigers, Howard University Bison, Jackson State University Tigers, Morgan State University Bears, North Carolina A&T State University Aggies, North Carolina Central University Eagles, Norfolk State University Spartans, and Tuskegee University Golden Tigers.

Each mascot bobblehead stands proudly on a base adorned with the school’s nickname, wearing the institution’s colors, and showcasing the school logo in the background. These limited-edition bobbleheads are individually numbered to 2,023 and can be exclusively purchased through the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store. The price for each bobblehead is $35, with a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order. The arrival dates for the HBCU Bobbleheads in Series 2 will vary, with some expected between now and November, while the bobbleheads from Series 1 have recently arrived. Importantly, a percentage of the sales from each bobblehead goes directly to the respective school.

Historical Significance of HBCUs

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) hold a special place in American education history. Originally concentrated in the Southern United States and founded during the Reconstruction era, there are over 100 HBCUs in the United States today. These institutions were established in the 19th century with the primary mission of providing quality, accredited higher education to Black Americans. They played a vital role in offering opportunities for higher education when traditionally white institutions denied admission to Black Americans due to slavery, segregation, and systemic racism.

The Higher Education Act of 1965 formally defines HBCUs as accredited higher education institutions established before 1964 with the principal mission of educating Black Americans. While they were initially established for Black students only, HBCUs now welcome learners of all races. Many notable figures have graduated from HBCUs, including civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., United States Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and United States Vice President Kamala Harris. These institutions continue to play a pivotal role in advancing education and equality in the United States.

“We’re excited to be expanding the HBCU Bobblehead Collection with the addition of 16 additional bobbleheads,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “The first series was extremely popular and led to requests for several more schools and mascots. We know these bobbleheads, which celebrate the rich history of these amazing institutions, will be very popular with the alumni, students, faculty, staff, fans, and communities.”
