Born in Greensboro, NC, and raised on a steady diet of soul and jazz, Sevv grew up toying with the titillating tones of saxophone and trombone. Dipping her toes into live performances, she felt the energetic flow made possible by music. How did you discover your favorite artists? Did someone introduce you to them or did you discover them on you own?

Sunday mornings at home were my gateway to soul music. My mom played classic gospel, R&B and oldies when I was growing up. The radio was my initial introduction. Nowadays social media and streaming has allowed me to discover my newer favorite artists and influenced me to take my own art seriously.

Could you tell us a bit about your songwriting process?

I listen to beats first, create melodies then I plug in the words afterwards.

Could you tell us about “BLU”?

BLU is an emotional rollercoaster. It exposes the complexities of the human heart, and emotional uncertainty in relationships. I’m posing the question; do you want the blues? Do you want all types of blue as it relates to the toxicity of an unhealthy “situation ship.”

Is “BLU” about someone specific to you?

Specific someone? No. It is about a real-life, relatable experience that reminds me that relationships are complex? Yes.

How was working with director IAMDZHN on the music video for “BLU”?

It was great working with Da’Zhan. We actually shot a music video a few years ago and the footage got damaged and it never saw the light of day so this was our comeback. He’s easy to work with, he’s very creative, he knew and understood our vision so it was an easy process.

Which venues/cities do you enjoy performing at the most?

I haven’t performed recently; I’m focusing on artist development and building my catalog. Looking forward to opening up for someone and going on my first tour.

What can we expect next from SevvTheArtist?

I’m continuing to build my sound, my catalog and my image ahead of my debut album. Look forward to new music, and all things, SevvTheArtist.
