0Dawn Richard Releases New Single “Jacuzzi” Accompanied by a Scorching Music Video
Available online everywhere, Merge Records artist Dawn Richard releases her ecstatic dancehall pop single “Jacuzzi,” a follow-up to “Bussifame” which was lauded by everyone from MTV (“a space-funk celebration”) to the New York Times (“[it] just keeps adding levels of perky syncopation”) to Billboard (“Dare you not to dance.”). Both tracks are from her forthcoming sixth solo album Second Line, due April 30.
Dawn Richard had this to say about the new single and video:
Welcome to “Jacuzzi.” A simulation. A V00D00 visual.
The music visual is a digital simulation test.
Put three Black women together at different stages in their lives:
– a mother of 1-year-old twins,
– a college student who is a fitness trainer, and
– King Creole (me).
We learned the same choreography and through motion showcased that no matter what form the body is in, it can be sexy and beautiful.
This visual is the celebration of body positivity, that femininity and sexuality can be in any body form. The way a mother moves will be different from how a young woman with no kids in the prime of her 20s moves. Doesn’t make her less sexy. Stretch marks, curves, blemishes, and imperfections are seen throughout the simulation. We chose to leave those unedited to showcase the beauty in the everyday woman unfiltered.
Dawn Richard (pronounced “ree-shard”) treats Louisiana Creole culture, New Orleans bounce, and Southern Swag as elemental, allowing herself to weave in and out of house, footwork, R&B, and more. As she says, “I am the genre.” Her upcoming album is inspired by this culture and familial musical heritage tied to the bayou.
As a founding member of Danity Kane, and later with Diddy’s Dirty Money, Dawn was able to explore the ins and outs of commercial pop music. As a solo artist, she opted to self-release her music. Over the span of five critically acclaimed full-length albums, Dawn has made the message clear that she will not bow down or bend to industry norms. All the while, she’s built her resume with enough extracurriculars to make your head spin: Cheerleader for the New Orleans Hornets? Check. Animator for Adult Swim? Check. Owner-operator of a vegan pop-up food truck? Check. Martial arts expert? Check!
