0Dennis Smith Jr. Double Downs On Not Participating In The Dunk Contest This Year
During Mavericks media day I asked Dennis Smith Jr. if we would see him participate in the Slam Dunk contest. He would respond “I’m not doing the dunk contest this year,” said Dennis Smith Jr. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon would follow by asking why no interest in the dunk contest? And Smith said “I don’t think it’s for me,” Smith said. “The gimmicks and everything that comes with it. I’m not with it.”

Smith participated in last year’s dunk contest in Los Angeles during All-Star weekend but came up a little bit short even though he had one of the best dunks in the event. The dunk would land a perfect score from the judges. Fellow rookie and runner-up for Rookie of the Year Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz would win the event.
Prior to the Maverick’s preseason game against the Beijing Ducks, I asked Smith if he stood by the comments he made at media day regarding the dunk contest. Since the all-star weekend will be in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is 2 hours and 46 mins away from Fayetteville, NC where Smith grew up.
“I won’t be participating in the dunk contest the gimmicks that come with the event, it’s not for me,” said Smith. He added that he will be watching though because there is always a good contest,” Smith told me.
February is five months away and of course, Smith can change his mind if he chooses. The winner of last year’s contest Donovan Mitchell definitely wants to see him in this year’s event as he voices his opinion on Twitter.
