Comedian Steve Harvey hosts national camp to mentor fatherless young men

Pain, dispair, and hopelessness are daily struggles for particular segments of our community. Young men who are fatherless or lack a real MAN as a role model, no matter how great their Mother or female inspiration might be, are caught in a whirlwind of confusion on HOW to be a man. Simple things like tying a tie, or how to look someone in the eye when in conversation, how to respect another human being. These things many take for granted, are skills these cats may never learn.

As each successive generation misses out on necessary skill training from their elders, those that follow are robbed even more than the last. Eventually, we could see a return to paleolithic times when all we know how to iterate is a grunt. Ok, that’s too dramatic I know, but you get my point.

With the current social climate in America, it’s imperative that elders reach out, not down, and show youngsters a path to creating a change in how they are as a person and perceived by society. By doing this, perhaps we give them a chance to be productive members of the community. Confident, conscious and aware is the name of the game for success. How do we do that?

Steve Harvey and his wife, Marjorie are forces for change with the annual Steve Harvey Mentoring Program. Joined by leading corporate citizen Choice Hotels, which provided cost-free lodging to the mothers of participants, staff, and volunteers, the young men worked on themselves in a safe and inspirational setting. I’d have said stress-free except as a retired Army vet, the presence of U.S. Army personnel who also engaged with the participants means that much-needed discipline was also in the mix!

A total of 220 fatherless male youths from across the country, aged 13-18, were invited to attend a mentoring camp experience at Camp Grace in Roberta, GA hosted by the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men. During the program, the teens live among male role models and are exposed to educational and inspirational activities aimed to introduce them to adulthood and teambuilding, instill self-respect and respect for others, teach helpful life skills and introduce problem-solving techniques to conquer obstacles and empower their futures.

Choice Hotels has supported the annual Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men since its inaugural year and is now the program’s largest donor and partner. In addition to providing complimentary hotel stays for the mothers of participants, Harvey Foundation staff and volunteers, Choice Hotels has contributed more than a quarter-million dollars to the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation in less than two years.
