Celebrating the Sounds That Made R&B With Carlos Romero and ‘Southern Soul’

I woke up kinda on one today…something about music, urban music, has been really pissing me off, maybe it’s the sameness, lack of inspiration and most importantly, lack of SOUL!!! So, on this MEMORIAL DAY 2018, as we commemorate and spend the day “Honoring Those Who Served” in our military, it seemed appropriate to also celebrate the sounds they might have been listening too.

Before the migrations to the metropolis regions of America, Soul got its start in the South, where pain, strife, etc., were every day all day elements. From those experiences, came a sound that later became adulterated and morphed into a commercialized form of music called R&B…we all know the story…s/o Pat Boone and Elvis…not so much!

On to the Godmother of R&B… Southern Soul

There is a strong move out of North Carolina led by a gentleman named Carlos Romero, creator of the CPN Stream Network which devotes itself to celebrating and giving a platform for the “Southern Soul” genre, which has largely been ignored except by a select section of the music-loving populace.

Carlos has been plugging away as a champion of the genre and has gained support from major entities like ECU (formerly East Carlina University) and their “Idea 2 Impact” program which helped elevate the movement from a simple facebook live stream to studio space in the campus’ Willis Building, along with infrastructure to support the new streaming network.

The platform expansion began via a program within ECU in partnership with the National Science Foundation which concentrated on the “Science of Business” of which Romero is a groundbreaking graduate.
