Dirk Nowitzki “won’t win” 6th man of the year award says JJ Barea

This past Friday the Dallas open their 2018- 2019 season by hosting their annual Media Day. Dirk Nowitzki will be back for his record-breaking 21st season with the Dallas Mavericks. The only twist is that its likely that he will be coming off the bench with the second unit, as former Euro League MVP Luka Doncic slated to take his place in the starting line-up.

The Mavericks are coming off a 24-58 record from last season, which landed them in the draft lottery. It is not every day that you have the 6th all-time leading scorer in NBA history in a sixth man role, but the Mavericks projected to explore that option.  During Harrison Barnes’ media day press conference he discussed the different dynamic that Dirk would potentially bring off the bench.

“Well, I think if he starts or comes off the bench. The role that he has played this last couple of years has been his ability to stretch the floor and make the defensive stay on honest on him. Spacing whether its, Dwight Powell or DeAndre rolling whoever it might be having that stretch presence is huge. Whether he is starting or coming off the bench, he has great chemistry with both his point guards. I think he will be effective regardless of where he is.” Harrison told me.

Earlier today after the Mavs practices Dirk’s long-time teammate and the only other remaining member of 2011 NBA Championship team. Spoke to the media and I had the opportunity ask JJ if his future Hall of Fame teammate will win Sixth Man of the Year Award this year:

“Nah I don’t think so, Hey you never know, but Nah I don’t think so,” Barea told me

Hey, its the NBA and anything can happen. We will just have to see how it plays out.
