Exclusive: World premiere – AVA reveal their breathtaking video for album track ‘Mulholland’

Unapologetically challenging the definition of modern neo-classical music, AVA are a maverick, creative powerhouse, consisting of prolific violinist Anna Phoebe and pianist Aisling Brouwer. Following the release of their debut album ‘Waves’ on One Little Indian this summer.

AVA have announced their first major headlining show at London’s Moth Club on Tuesday 10thDecember, after a string of UK dates supporting Erland Cooper and reveal their breathtaking video for album track ‘Mulholland’ for the first time.

Anna and Aisling have come together to create a stunningly fresh sound that has captured the imagination of both their manager Nitin Sawhney and iconic label One Little Indian (home of Bjork, Poppy Ackroyd, Tusks). The duo combines a unique and potent blend of cinematic soundscapes, evocative and immersive electronic journeys of the heart and mind, at times urgent and bewitching. AVA is the coming together of two compelling performers.

Anna Phoebe and Aisling Brouwer compose, produce, record and mix their music and are the creative engine behind AVA. The new video for ‘Mulholland’ embodies this creativity with gravitas and grace. The video is a powerful vehicle that takes the viewer into the world of AVA. The stark, minimal set is the perfect contrasting backdrop to the visceral interplay between Anna and Aisling. ‘Mulholland’ is a highly charged glimpse into a private performance that sees the intensity oscillate between the two performers.

Here the duo give us the lowdown on their debut album ‘Waves’…….

Tell us about your debut album Waves?

AB: Anna & I started writing together after meeting at a gig several years ago, we instantly clicked, went for coffee, and became friends. After going down to visit her in Deal, Kent, we decided to have a jam session and wrote the title track Waves. The whole album happened so organically, and it was never intended for it to become our main project – but we both knew from that first jam session that we had stumbled onto something special. The connection and chemistry we experience when playing together are unlike anything I had ever experienced before.

How would you describe your sound to new fans?

AP: I would describe the AVA sound as emotional, melodic, cinematic – it was a cathartic experience writing this album together, and it feels cathartic when we play live. It’s like a sonic bubble with layers of interwoven electronic and classical sounds, but with the interplay of violin and piano at its heart.

Who are your musical inspirations?

AB: I think given the full range of musical experiences and influences in our lives we both get inspired by anything from classical composers to rock bands to DJ’s. We both always really loved Johann Johannsen’s work but could equally get very excited by electronic artists like Jon Hopkins & Rival Consoles. It’s hard to narrow it down to specific artists because really it’s the amalgamation of both our musical backgrounds and it’s forever changing and updating, and that’s what keeps us excited.

Who would be your dream collaboration?

AP: I’ve always collaborated with other musicians and love creating a melting pot of sound – I love that the final result can sometimes be surprising and take you on a new journey. I think with AVA we’re still enjoying that process as a duo. We may have a few guest singers on the next album. Again, in terms of true collaboration, we would love to work with filmmakers, visual artists or dance companies — an art form where our music can support or be combined with someone else’s creative narrative.

Have you got a tour in the pipeline?

AB: Yes. We are currently on tour supporting Erland Cooper and are headlining Moth Club in London on Dec 10th. We are also playing a festival in The Netherlands on Nov 23rd. You can find all our dates on www.musicofava.com.

How do you spend your time away from music?

AB: I love being outdoors and being in nature, and there’s some stunning forests & lakes around Berlin where I go to decompress when I can. I also love art exhibitions and anything cultural/creative that can be a resource of inspiration.

AP: I live by the sea and love sitting on the beach or taking long walks – anything which involves being by the water and seeing the horizon. It’s therapeutic on my own first thing in the morning, studio breaks or with my kids after school and weekends. With my friends, a chilled evening with dinner and wine, to catch up. I often go to galleries on my own, and sketch musical ideas while in the exhibition. I feel like life races by, so I love anything which temporarily slows time down and helps be present at the moment.
