j-rob Discusses Political Grunge Rap Single ‘Fuck12’

j-rob brings a mix of political grunge rap and personal psych-pop, elevating each form through lyrical storytelling. A poet at heart, j-rob speaks from his soul, expressing an intimate struggle that rings true for too many folks who suffer under systems of race, class, and identity-based oppression.

“Fuck12” is inspired by his experiences with the police, “for so long I felt powerless when around them because of the way I was abused. I wanted to write something to take some power back, something that would express both my distaste with the state of relations between the police and black folk and also would resonate with others and make them feel empowered to yell with me.”

Listen to ‘Fuck12’ now and read our exclusive conversation with j-rob below!

What makes ‘Fuck12’ different from your past work?

The way that Fuck12 is different than my past work is that it’s really politically driven. It’s also very loud and in your face, I had a lot of anger and pain that I needed to speak through and I really tried to have that resonate in this song.

Can you describe the concept behind the track?

Fuck12 is all about fighting back again police brutality. It’s recognizing all the bull shit that we face; the abuse, the misuse of power, the lack of respect and humanity shown to your fellow man, everything, and finally saying “fuck it, my back is against the wall, I gotta fight back.”

How would you describe your artistic evolution throughout your career?

I never would have imagined that I’d be making punkish kind of music. I mean, I always wanted to rap but when I started I thought my flow was so trash. I surprised myself as well as those around me when I started making this kind of punk-rap blend. I think I made a huge jump from my last song to this one. I’m beginning to recognize my strengths and the power behind my voice. I’m also exploring different avenues in terms of sound and hearing how they blend well with what I bring to the table. I’m falling more in love with punk/grunge type music and I’m excited to explore it.

What’s been the biggest change in your life over the past year?

I started to understand the potential that others see in me I’ve kinda always been a bit timid when it came to my own music but people are giving me a lot of respect which is comforting to see. I finally feel centered and aware of my skill set, I’m tryna hit the ground running.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written?

That’s a great question and I think depending on the day my answer would be different but for now I’d say Hot Head by Death Grips. I love everything about it from the production to the vocal performance. It’s just an incredibly dope song that hits you so hard, I really dig it.

And finally, where can readers keep up with what you are doing?

Instagram is the best way to keep tabs on my moves. I’m @halfwhitefullblack on the gram.
