0Ron Dante On The New Film “Streetlight Harmonies,” Singing With Gilbert Gottfried & More
The new film Streetlight Harmonies highlights the music during a period in time when the nation was innocent, and music was a magical elixir that helped a country in the post-war years, while building a bridge to the civil rights movement. “Doo-Wop,” as it became known, laid the foundation for what we now know as rock & roll, R&B, hip-hop and pop. This toe-tapping and finger-snapping musical expression crossed color barriers and created a legacy all of its own. It gave rise to decades of popular “boy bands” and “girl bands” of the 1960s beyond pop groups of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000.
Streetlight Harmonies was written and directed by Brent Wilson, former bassist for the rock band Panic! At The Disco. Wilson first emerged at the forefront of the pop music world 25 years ago, directing and producing videos for NSYNC, Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys. Through exclusive interviews with plenty of legendary singers — including Lala Brooks (The Crystals), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), singer/songwriter Brian McKnight, Lance Bass (NSYNC) and Ron Dante (The Archies) — the documentary explores the history and social impact of doo-wop within our nation’s history. The soundtrack of Streetlight Harmonies is available through Lakeshore Records. Tim Headington (Jersey Boys, Hugo, World War Z) and Theresa Steel Page of Ley Line Entertainment produced the film with Wilson. Notably, other film credits of Wilson’s include the award-winning A Gathering Of Heroes: The Last Reunion and a forthcoming biopic on The Beach Boys titled Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road.
The aforementioned Ron Dante spoke to me on March 30, 2020 about Streetlight Harmonies and plenty. Dante is most famously the lead vocalist behind the timeless Archies hit “Sugar Sugar,” but his credits also include co-producing the first nine Barry Manilow albums, recording albums under Don Kirshner’s supervision, and also working with the likes of Cher and Pat Benatar. Dante never stopped touring or recording, and he is a regular on the annual Happy Together summer tour alongside The Turtles. Oh, and as you’ll hear in that interview — as embedded below — he is as nice as they come.
