Australian Soul/R&B Artist Natalie Slade Shares Debut Single ‘Love Light’

Australian Soul/R&B vocalist Natalie Slade has released her debut single, ‘Love Light’. The track is the first taste of the Sydney based talent’s debut album, Control, out June 5th via Eglo Records. Produced by Hiatus Kaiyote’s Paul Bender, Slade’s vocals shine on this timeless piece. Bender’s classic groove-based analogue production perfectly compliments the singer’s emotive buttery tones and an approach to writing and storytelling well beyond her years.

On the single, Natalie explains ‘this was me working through a process. It’s a love song but not in the traditional sense because it’s about wanting for love but also, letting go of it. So really it’s about accepting that you can’t hold on to what isn’t yours to keep. This song is different to the rest of the album coz it happened in stages… I wrote these lyrics alone, then later in the week when I was hanging out with my friend Daniel Pliner, he wrote the piano part to it. We’d intended to record it together but then I moved to Melbourne and I stumbled into this amazing group of jazz musicians down there. I was blessed to be able to record it with Nick Martyn (drums); James Bowers (keys) and Paul Bender (bass) and then to have Bender producing as well was nuts! It just came to life before my eyes!’

Alongside the single comes the official music video for ‘Love Light’. Speaking to the video, Natalie details ‘the video was shot by Bruno Marion and edited by Tommie McSweeney and everyone in it is the last minute dream team. We had a different video in the making but nothing quite worked out so just when it was too late, I got together with my work-mate and a handful of friends to create a new clip. The whole thing is shot around our neighbourhoods – from Glebe to Newtown and ending at the Portuguese club in Marrickville – I’m dressed by a friend of mine who has an incredible wardrobe and we took a regular bus and were grateful that we didn’t get thrown off for disturbing the peace.’

Slade will also be releasing her debut album, Control, on June 5th. The album was produced by Hiatus Kaiyote’s Simon Mavin and features contributions from other members of the Grammy Nominated group. Combining Soul, Jazz, Folk and RnB, Natalie’s timeless vocals dazzle across the 10 stunning tracks, perfectly complemented by rich, live instrumentation and Mavin’s vibrant production. The album is classic to its core, whilst taking a fresh and energetic approach to a long tradition of Soul/R&B long players.

Control will be released on June 5th via London based label Eglo Records, the imprint responsible for pivotal releases from Floating Points, Fatima, Funkineven and Shafiq Husayn. Expect to be hearing a lot more from Natalie Slade in 2020.
