San James Emerges on “Otherwise”

Montreal, QC-native San James felt dispossessed leading up to the writing of her new song, “Otherwise.” Struggling with depression and anxiety, the artist hadn’t written a song in awhile.

Then, one day, on a subway ride home, San James started writing on her phone. The inspiration came suddenly, as if something had been waiting for a long time to express itself. In less than thirty minutes, she had written the lyrics to a very special song.

Otherwise” was the first time San James had ever written a song that wasn’t about love and relationships. It was about her. This song is a reassurance that it’s okay to feel vulnerable and that hardship can be overcome.

Otherwise” is a victory march; a reminder that we are all human and we all have inner shadows. The accompanying music video (directed by Gaelle Baumans) captures this idea. Even though it may not come easy, you’ve got this. Everything will be alright in the end.
