10 things to know about: Benedict

Hailing overseas, Pop-alt artist Benedict uses the power of music to address the themes of heartbreak, love and social observation. Recently, the Australian native released her nostalgic influenced pop single ‘Warzone’, a woozy number that observes the different relationships, and life lessons that they bring.

Benedict explains “Some relationships are warzones that can break us down mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is about the loneliness and pain that you take on then healing from past hurts and breathing your truth. As each human is unique and special it is about stepping out and trusting your heart and your goodness and fighting for your life. To me the most important thing is to become stronger and be your true self no matter what the consequences and live in your full truth as well as love others for their differences and unique selves.”

With an interesting past (spoiler alert – she was once a prison guard!), Hype Magazine caught up with Benedict to find out everything there is to know!

10 things to know about Benedict:

I played indoor soccer for Australia as a goalkeeper, and got to tour to Canada at the age of 16. I also played goalkeeper for NSW state outdoor.
I love Salsa (latin dancing) and have done since I was 17 years old. The music makes me feel so alive.
I am a qualified massage therapist. I still do treatments and love helping people who need healing.
I was a prison guard for 3 years in Melbourne, Australia.
I had a folk/roots band for 10 years. We toured throughout Australia and released a bunch of songs. It was super fun and very different to what I do now… that is for sure!
I rode 600km through Cambodia and raised funds for the Future Cambodian Fund for the orphanages. We visited the orphanages that we raised money for along the way, so it was a powerful experience in many ways.
My mothers side of the family is massive – she has 13 brothers and sisters! This means I have a huge amount of cousins and extended family. For our family catchups, my uncle puts together a family music festival each year. Nearly everyone gets up and sings a tune, or plays an instrument. There is never a dull moment during that weekend!
As well as being a singer/songwriter, I am also a producer. I love assisting other artists in development, songwriting and production.
The first big show I ever went and saw was Tracy Chapman. I was 15 years old and she inspired me deeply to continue as a singer/songwriter.
When I was 6 years old, I decided that I was The Flash and insisted on wearing red tights and a red turtleneck most of the year.
