Devvon Terrell’s ‘Vol. 2 Deja Vu’ is the Entanglement We All Need During Quarantine

Singer, rapper, and producer Devvon Terrell has been in the R&B game for years, dating back to his start as a YouTube sensation known for his reimagining of hit singles, but with a twist. Remixing songs with his own lyrics, he gained an impressive 800,000 subscribers and over 170 million video views. Over the years, Devvon has worked alongside huge names in music like Mya and Teddy Riley.

Devvon has been busy during quarantine. Having just released his new album, Vol. 2 Déjà Vu, a new official music video for “Thank My Exes” and fully animated videos for “You Trippin” and “Homewrecker” – the multi-faceted artist consistently shows off a digital world created by Devvon himself ,who is just as much a talented animator as he is a musician. The Hype Magazine Network sat down with the talented creator to talk about his new music, his unique use of animation, and the concept behind the perfect entanglement theme song, “Homewrecker.” Devvon also shares how he plans to diversify his incredible talents in the future and gives killer advice on securing placements as an independent artist.

What is the concept behind your new song “Homewrecker”? This one is very intriguing!

It’s basically about that situation a lot of people have been in but we never talk about. When you’re dating someone that is a kind of in a relationship (or situationship) and you start to question your own morals when it comes to this other person that you’re interested in. The premise is me questioning myself from a morality standpoint when it comes to this other person.

When you write, are you writing from real life experiences or conceptualizing other people’s experience?

It’s definitely personal experience, I love writing from that perspective. I don’t like to post my personal life that much, I’m the type of person that puts that in my music. You probably wouldn’t expect that to come from me, but I’m just like y’all.

Okay, so I have to ask, what were your thoughts when the whole Jada Pinkett-Smith and August Alsina thing hit the fan?

Well, I can only speak from a male perspective. So, when I look at myself and I look at August, that’s something I probably would’ve kept to myself. The reason why is because at the end of the day, none of us truly know the situation that was prefaced before that. She is a married woman, so for me as a man I would’ve kept that to myself. If he felt that he needed to express that, it’s that man’s life. I probably would’ve taken the L and just put it into a song or put it in my closet of skeletons.

Your music video is fully animated, and skills as an animator are fascinating, so where do you see yourself taking that skill?

I’m such a do it yourself kind of guy. When it comes to my music, I record, mix and master everything myself right here at my studio at home. When it comes to my music videos, I was recording artists and shooting everyone’s videos when I was in New York and that’s how I got my name around. It’s a skillset that I have had since I was on the come-up years ago. It just came from me figuring out how to get things done myself. The animation is really a new world for me. I go over the details and mannerisms with my super talented animator in another country, but I’m very hands on with it.

What’s in the future for you?

I’m always thinking about what’s next and what I want to try. I do see myself in the future wanting to direct, act, and a bunch of different things. I’m so aware that it’s one step at a time. I’ve got to pace myself. I’m one of those people that’s always thinking about what I want to do next, what I want to try. But, it’s one step at a time.

You’ve had a ton of placements, and as an independent artist creating that revenue stream is wise. What advice would you give to other indie artists?

First, you really want to get with a publisher. Film companies and Television companies go to publishers and ask for certain types of music and work out deals. If you want to get into that world, you first need to find a publisher.

We’re absolutely enthralled by the incredible range of talent this young star possesses. Check out Devvon Terrell’s new album Vol. 2 Deja Vu on Spotify and watch his new music video for “Thank My Exes.”
