Doing What Works vs. Doing You Independent Producer Matisse Tsoy & Our Mindset’s Impact On Growth

In an online world full of frustrated underground musicians spinning their wheels, hip-hop producer/engineer Matisse Tsoy stands out.

The underground is a hotbed of creative experimentation and innovation, but at the same time (ironically), it can also be remarkably stubborn when it comes to accepting changes in the industry, both stylistically and functionally. While open about still being an up and comer, Matisse isn’t content existing in the cynical echo chamber of social media rap music. According to him, “Most of us, including myself sometimes, need to dial down our egos significantly and move away from our personal idealist notions of how we think the music world ‘should’ work. We need to learn how it actually works.”

When some say we need to just do what we want consistently to succeed and others say we need to hop onto what’s trending, Matisse argues that the answer is probably more of a balance. “Of course we need to stay true to ourselves in our music – I’m a huge supporter of embracing our own unique individuality – but if we ignore what’s working, who’s succeeding, and why, we’re missing out on huge learning and growth opportunities,” he says. “I feel like we need to take what we see is working for other artists and producers out there, and incorporate elements of that into music, content, and strategies that are still genuine to us.” Matisse has done his best to do just that, and it’s been working.

Say what you will about the state of rap music today, but he has a point. The industry evolves, and we have to grow with it. With a great first year in beat sales, breaking into the sync licensing game, and continually collaborating with countless dope artists & producers, the Matisse Tsoy brand is shaping up to be a formidable force in the independent music scene. And he really just has to thank his mindset.

Having had a successful 2020 run despite all the COVID-related complications, Matisse Tsoy has no reasons to be frustrated, and shows no signs of slowing down.
