0Who is “Heartbreak” Mosa?
Emerging artist Mosa, also known as “The Heartbreak Kid” is on the rise. The rapper, singer, and songwriter has been quietly working on his craft since the age of 14.
A Dominican kid from Bean Town to H-Town, the Boston native who moved to Houston in late 2018 has quickly become one of the hottest artists in the city, but it doesn’t stop there. His ability to write and perform in Spanish and English has won over a Latin American fan base to add to his growing fan bases that span from the US to Russia to the Middle East and beyond. Mosa is continuing to make a name for himself in the industry as next up, a kid with the potential to be the next international superstar.
Mosa released his first LP, Heartbreak University, on Valentine’s Day weekend (Feb 12.) Heartbreak University is the highly anticipated follow-up project to his 2019 mixtape, Heartbreak Season, an instant classic laced with break-up anthems and lyrical wordplay that anyone can relate to.
Hype: Where you from and how’d you first fall in love with hip-hop?
HM: I was born in NY lived in the Bronx a little bit then moved to Lawrence/Haverhill, Massachusett. Music has always been in the family since I could remember but my older brother was who got me started.
Hype: Who are you musical inspirations and influences?
HM: Music has always been in the family since I could remember, but my older brother was who got me started Wayne, Drake, 50, Chris Brown, etc. I listened to a lot of different music growing up, even Jaden Smith too, seeing a kid my age take on the music industry was inspiring .
Hype: Describe your sound.
HM: My sound is very different, my approach, my persona, my message I lay out across records is definitely a big difference. There’s a lot of talent in the city, but I know it takes more than just the talent.
Hype: You’ve gotten nods from the Veterans such as Drake, what kind of expectation does the place on you?
HM: I’m grateful for all the love I’ve been getting from veterans and new people to the game, I take it as reassurance for myself to know what I bring to the table and keep me locked in. I just wanna put out the best music I can possible, reach my full potential, and keep my best foot forward for my people and myself.
Hype: What are you looking to contribute to hip-hop & R&B?
HM: I’m really motivated by the people I’m around, my situations I go through, and anything I can take and turn into fuel for this fire we got going on right now.
Hype: Where is Heartbreak University and what has it taught you?
HM: Heartbreak University was a point in my life where I had to make the best of my situation, which is an everyday thing, but for this project specifically everything was fairly new to me, on top of that going through my lil “heartbreak” situation, all the different feelings I had going through the process of making this album is actually in the album. It taught me to make the best out the worst and the only way to make the best is by surrounding yourself with the best.
Hype: Your new project is solid in my opinion, what was it like recording on your first Mike Dean production, what advice did he give you?
HM: Mike Dean working on my project was a surprise to me, we originally wanted him to mix & master one song for us (Stranger Things) then he heard the project and wanted to do the whole thing, I am forever thankful and grateful for that happening, he got my respect always. We spoke on the phone prior to him completing the album but he gave me some words of encouragement and reminded me of how different this sound was.
Hype: What’s your motivation?
HM: We just gotta keep doing what we doing and then some, everything’s been working out well for us, so if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I’m hoping to get this project as mush attention as it can get.
Hype: What would you like to work with on future music?
HM: I would like to work more on collaborating with producers & Artists that fit what we have going on.
Hype: What’s next for you?
HM: Just the beginning for all of us, we’ve been talking about a deluxe for “Heartbreak University” so hopefully we can get that to y’all soon.
