Barbie Launches Naomi Osaka Doll Ahead Of 2021 Olympics
This week Mattel has announced that they will be turning world-renowned tennis star Naomi Osaka’s likeness into a Barbie doll.
Barbie first recognized the talented athlete as a role model with a one-of-a-kind doll in celebration of Barbie’s 60th Anniversary in 2019. However it wasn’t until last Spring when the Mattel team began working on bringing Naomi’s doll to life for children of all ages and collectors to enjoy. Collaborating closely with Naomi’s team, Naomi was able to be involved in the process of hand-selecting the doll’s outfit based on a Nike outfit she wore at the 2020 Australian Open.
“It’s such an honor to be a part of the Barbie Role Model series, and to remind young girls that they can make a difference in the world,” says Naomi in an exclusive quote to Girls United. “I want young girls everywhere to feel empowered to dream big and to know that if they believe in themselves that anything is possible!”
Barbie is definitely making a lot of noise as they stay committed to celebrating real-life heroes such as Naomi, who they define as “remarkable women who are breaking boundaries and inspiring the next generation.”
Lisa McKnight, SVP and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls at Mattel, shared her thoughts on Noami being added to the Barbie family. “We are incredibly honored to spotlight Naomi Osaka as part of our Barbie Role Model series,” McKnight said. “She has paved the way for future generations of girls to dream bigger, and through her unwavering courage and honesty, shown the world the importance of being your own biggest champion. Naomi’s doll will be available this fall and will retail for $29.99.
