Dana Gould On The Excellent New Film “Joy Ride,” Bobcat Goldthwait, Music & More

Joy Ride is the excellent new documentary concert film starring comedy legends Bobcat Goldthwait (Shakes The Clown, Call Me Lucky, Police Academy) and Dana Gould (The Simpsons, Stan Against Evil), and it is now available on-demand. Directed by Goldthwait and filmed along their co-headlining tour, Joy Ride captures frenemies Goldthwait and Gould onstage and off as they entertain audiences and carefully-navigate highways and their decades-old fraught friendship, reflecting upon their careers and relationship with comedy along the way. In addition to live stand-up shot on their tour, Joy Ride features archival footage from both Goldthwait and Gould’s expansive careers, photos and stories from their personal lives, and including appearances by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Bob Hope, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, David Letterman, Arsenio Hall, Regis Philbin and Kathy Lee Gifford.

Aforementioned credits aside, Dana Gould began his professional comedy career at the age of 17. Between Comedy Central, HBO and Showtime, Dana has 6 solo stand-up comedy specials to his credit. As an actor, Gould has had memorable turns on Seinfeld and Parks & Rec, and is one of the few actors to play his live-action self on Family Guy and The Simpsons. He was a writer/performer on the original The Ben Stiller Show and co-created and maintains an equally active career as a writer; he later co-created the MTV series Super Adventure Team with his old Ben Stiller office-mate Rob Cohen.

On October 14, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dana Gould via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Joy Ride, we spoke about how he came to know Bobcat Goldthwait, his history as a rock fan, and future projects. More on Gould and Joy Ride can be found by clicking here, here and here.
