Who Is DJ Slim Thiq?

There’s a DJ in the Kansas City area who’s making a steady climb through the ranks. Within a comparatively short time on the 1’s and 2’s DJ Slim Thiq has grown her regional audience to the point that she has DJ’d for a couple of Strange Music artists as well getting looks from the DJ coalitions. We don’t get to talk to a lot of DJs as they are growing in their craft so I wanted to know more before she totally blew up and got out of reach LOL. The Hype Magazine got her to weigh in on a few things.

From the outside looking in, Who Is DJ Slim Thiq?

DJ Slim Thiq is one of the most unique persons you could come across.  She is very outspoken, wild and random.  If her words don’t make  you laugh it’s a fact her weird and crazy actions will.  I guess it’s safe to say she’s a little STRANGE. When she is in her zone mixing music, she is seen as a confident woman representing for the ladies.

What was the defining moment that led you to becoming a DJ?

The most defining moment that brought me to the DJ world would be, attending my first Summer Jam concert at Sandstone Amphitheater, back in 2010 in Kansas City, MO. Tech N9ne was one of the artist performing. Based on how he took over the stage, and turned the amphitheater upside down, immediately I wanted to hold that type of power, and feel the same type of love he received. I finally narrowed down my many career choices based off that single experience.  I later solidified what I wanted to do, specifically within the music industry when I actually met a female DJ. I haven’t turned back since, you could say things started to become clearer to me after that interaction.

How long have you been working on your craft?

I have been working on my craft for the last three years. Honestly, it it has  flown by. I constantly remind myself to work harder and do more to capitalize and be more successful as a female DJ.  Perfecting any craft  I feel there is always room to grow and I constantly strive to do so.

What’s been the biggest challenge to becoming a working DJ?

The biggest challenge I’ve dealt with while becoming a working DJ is dealing with my anxiety  and  DJ’n a set. It feels like I’m doing two jobs at once, mixing and maintaining my vibe.  Things are definitely getting better and it is a process to overcome. I refuse to let anxiety keep me from reaching my full potential as the next best female DJ. Besides that it would be entering in a predominantly male industry and not being taken seriously based on me being a woman aka a threat.

What’s the most satisfying for you about working in music?

The most satisfying about working in the music industry is the love and support I receive as a DJ. It really has helped me blossom into the woman  I am today. Just looking back on how far I’ve come gives me chills. Things have definitely changed for me since I’ve decided on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I’ve never felt happier. I also see the power I hold as a female DJ, and being beautiful makes things a little easier for me.

You are from the midwest, would it be safe to say you are a Tech fan?

Anyone who knows me or has met me will definitely agree and know I am 100% a Tech N9ne fan. I’ve been a fan since the age of 15, I have a Strange Music sleeve on my right arm, and more merchandise you could imagine. So yea, I’d say I’m a fan. Better yet, a Technician. I’ve been around so long it has started to work in my favor. I have DJ’d for a few of his artist on his label and plan on securing a position touring with Tech as his personal DJ. All I can say is keep your eyes open and stay tuned. Things are definitely working on my favor.

What other artists are you rocking with?

The artists I’m rockin with would be Yung Cat,  Navé Monjo and Krizz Kaliko all based out of Kansas City, Mo. Between these three, there is too much talent flowing between them. When it comes to mainstream music, I listen to Megan Thee Stallion, Key Glock and Cardi B often. I see myself working with these artist in the near future.

With all the music and sounds you hear, are you still able to listen to music as a consumer or do you find yourself analyzing everything you hear?

I can still listen as a consumer, I would say I still analyze most of the music I hear out of habit. I believe it’s my way of  learning how  songs are built, high-key I want to become a producer.

What do you feel the role of the DJ is?

I believe the role of the DJ is to control the crowd, make  sure everyone is enjoying the music, and having a great time with any type of genera being played. The DJ is the one that holds  everything together. I guess you can say I drive the boat. With this being said “reading the crowd”  becomes very important when  it comes to having a successful event.

What’s the most important thing we should know about you?

The most important thing you should know about me is I refuse to let doubt, fear, or  hate lead me off the path I was put on. Despite how many obstacles, and challenges that are set before me, I will accomplish each and every goal I set. Motivational speaker Les Brown once said, “If something is hard, then its worth doing hard” trust and believe I’m applying pressure out here. This is only the beginning.
