Roland Esparza & Austin Savage On The Forthcoming “El Pavo Bravo,” El Paso, Eddie Guerrero, Hornitos, The Black List & More

In April 2021, Hornitos Tequila and The Black List announced a program in support of amplifying new voices in the film industry. After reviewing submissions, Hornitos and The Black List have selected 5 recipients from around the world who have hopes of turning their screenplays into proof of concept short films with mentorship from The Black List. A continuation of Hornitos’ The Shot Fund — a multi-year, investment platform dedicated to empowering today’s generation of shot-takers, taking shots at trailblazing ventures in their careers — the announced winners of the Take Your Shot grants were Ella Gale, John Killoran, Leslie Nipkow, Steve Anthopoulos, and Roland Esparza and Austin Savage.

The aforementioned Roland Esparza and Austin Savage are filmmakers based in El Paso, Texas. Esparza and Savage both have vast, authentic experiences in writing, art, comedy and film. Titled El Pavo Bravo, their short concept follows a subject who abandons a career in wrestling following the death of his best friend, and takes up a career in music in an effort to win back his long lost love. After hearing more about their work from the filmmakers themselves during a November 2021 virtual media event, I put out an interview request to speak with Esparza and Savage, which finally happened on December 21, 2021; the full Zoom-based recording of that conversation is embedded below.
