MAYZIN: Town Bidness

Let’s hop right into this latest single, “ANGELS“—Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition? And, how then does “ANGELS” either differ and / or compare to previous entries?

“Angels” is an interesting song ’cause it’s a record that I did without following my usual formula. It was around 2am, my DJ, Scotty2Heat, and I were in my home studio, I found the sample and made the beat in about 30 minutes. Once I finished making the beat, I started to write to it and record references but I ended up scrapping it and we shut down and went to bed for the night. Next morning comes around, I wake up around 8am and me and Scotty met at my studio in downtown Vegas by 9am. I put the beat on and freestyled on it for like 10 minutes straight, and literally went line by line refining each line and I had the song done and mixed in like an hour after that. With that being said, the energy of the room was just perfect when I made “Angels” and the story of how it was made makes it that much more special of a record.

As a songwriter, when you sit down to pen your lyrics where do you draw your inspiration from?

I usually draw inspiration from my everyday life and experiences. Sometimes I’m also (able) to channel my energy from things the people close to me are going through as well.

What particular string of events actually led to your current signing to / with Golden State Entertainment?

What led me to signing with GSE was first the introduction from (a) good friend of mine – and Warriors’ DJ – DJ D Sharp. From there, we had multiple meetings and I was able to roadmap my vision and share all the things I’ve been working on. Once I saw that they believed in me and everything I presented, it all felt right.

Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music — When did you become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for MAYZIN?

I got really interested in music when I was like 14 years old. It mostly came from just being in love with music in general and just wanting to understand more about how it’s created. So I started with writing raps, which I kept to myself for awhile and would only show them to my close friends. So, my 16th birthday rolled around and my dad asked what I wanted, and I asked him to get me FL Studio, ’cause in the past I had been using pirated programs and struggling just to get my hands on a DAW. Once he did that, I was fully invested…it took a few years for it to “click,” but that’s when it grew from an interest into a passion.

Now you’re a native of Oakland, CA, correct? So growing up in ‘The Town,’ who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

Honestly, most of my strongest influences for my own music come from outside of Oakland – or The Bay – BUT growing up, the Bay Area sound had a big influence on my life. Some of my favorite Bay artists are Keak Da Sneak, Turf Talk, E-40, Mistah Fab, Clyde Carson…and the list goes on. As far as artists that I feel directly influenced my music, I’d have to mention Kid Cudi, Wayne, Big Sean, Toro Y Moi and even early Travis Scott.

In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?

I’d classify my sound as a few different things. I feel like my music drifts into different lanes, where I can go from giving straight bars then to singing and then to something hype. With that being said, I would classify my music as “vibey.” I think I have a song that can fit any setting, and songs that any age group can listen to which is something I don’t think you can say about a lot of upcoming artists.

Where does your moniker originally derive from?

Mayzin comes from my dad. One day I was showing him a song I was working on and (he) said something along the lines of, “man, this is amazing,” but he didn’t put emphasis on the A or the G in the word, so to me it sounded like Mayzin and I ran with it.

Switching gears here…

To date, what has been your greatest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

My favorite career moment to this point is probably performing at the sold out playoff game last month…that moment just made me feel like all of the hard work over the past years didn’t go unnoticed.

What’s an average day like for you?

The average day for me can vary. Usually it starts with me getting up to go play basketball in the morning, then leads to studio sessions; depending on how I feel. I’m also a full-time audio engineer as well, so if I’m not working on my own music I’m helping others bring their projects to life.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…

Having fans is still surreal to me at this point, but it’s dope getting that love in real life. I’m extremely grateful for everyone that’s a supporter, and I can’t wait to start dropping merch and doing more for the fans.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

My favorite part about this line of work is just the impact my story can have on others. I create records that come from my heart, so others being able to resonate with my art is a great feeling. What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? It might be cliché, but my biggest advice would be to keep grinding it out. Block the outside noise because none of it matters. Plays, stats, support – none of it matters – when you create from a place of love for the art…all of those things will come naturally. People always care eventually, seek knowledge and remember you don’t need to be in a multi-million dollar studio to make good records.

Lastly, what’s next for MAYZIN?

What’s next for me at this point is dropping records and and more shows. We’re gearing up! Please let us know if you need any further clarifications, and we appreciate you being patient as we’ve been extremely busy. Thank you!
