0Live Session with Tichina Arnold
Live Session with Image Award Winner and Daytime Emmy nominee Tichina Arnold who recently made her directorial debut with the 20-minute short film, “Oh Baby Baby”, co-written by Maggy Francois and Maimah Karmo as part of the fourth season of “The Waiting Room” series on BET Her which brings light to health struggles experienced by black women.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the fourth season of “The Waiting Room” features two new short films about black women battling breast cancer and following their journey of dealing with their diagnosis. Tichina’s opening foray into directing, “Oh Baby Baby”, focuses on a high fashion entrepreneur trying to conceive a child when she is blindsided by developing breast cancer from IVF estrogen treatment.
Our conversation covered not only her journey and the defining moment that brought Tichina to the entertainment industry, but we also dug into her why for doing it. With “Oh Baby Baby” being her directorial debut, it was fascinating to have her take me through her process, how she saw the script materializing through her directorial lens, and some of the most touching moments from the project for her. I got the feeling from her that along with her other accomplishments, including Martin, a Daytime Emmy nomination, multiple NAACP Image Awards, Teen Choice Award, etc., this might be one of her favorite personal highlights.
During this interview…things went beyond the theme of the industry and into the reality of Black women’s health, especially breast cancer, and how it not only affects the patient but the family as well. Black women have often been the undeniable backbone of our families and communities since slavery and so the impact of this disease, while devastating in ANY community, is ofttimes even more crushing within the Black communities…there are just levels which if you know…you know.
