15th Annual AAMBC Literary Awards to Honor Tracy Brown

Tracy Brown was a renowned literary genius who touched the lives of millions with her gripping novels and heartfelt stories. Her remarkable talent and unwavering dedication to her craft left an indelible mark on the literary world. This year at the AAMBC Literary Awards, we remember and honor her extraordinary life and the profound impact she made.

Tracy Brown began her writing career in 2003 when she published her first novel, Black, at Triple Crown Publications. When she joined Macmillan in 2005, her writing triple Crown Publicationscareer took off. She published nine novels, contributed to two anthologies, wrote and directed two stage plays, and received a nomination for the Newbery Medal for young readers. Many of you might know Mrs. Brown and a few of you might have read her novels. She wrote Black, Dime Piece, Snapped, Flirting with Disaster, White Lines series, and countless other stories.

Tracy Brown had an unparalleled ability to delve into the depths of human emotion, confront social issues, and create relatable characters made her a trailblazer in the literary landscape. Her books became a refuge for many, offering solace, hope, and the courage to confront life’s challenges head-on. Tracy Brown wasn’t just a writer. She was an advocate for social justice, using her platform to shed light on important issues and amplify marginalized voices. In 2017 Tracy received a recipient of a proclamation from the New York City Council in honor of her outstanding service and enduring contributions to the community. She also received a citation for exemplary service from the New York State Senate’s 20th District, the 2017 awardee of a certificate of honor from the New York City Public Advocate’s office, and the 2013 recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the National Council of Negro Women.

Tracy often gave her time to others. She volunteered as the instructor of a creative writing course for young ladies in a correctional environment of the New York State foster care system and taught scholars at Staten Island’s charter school, Eagle Academy. She was also the Director of the nonprofit organization, We Are Ladies First LTD. Her commitment to promoting equality and fostering inclusivity inspired all who knew her. Tracy’s unwavering belief in the power of literature to bring about meaningful change will forever be cherished.

This year, our AMMBC family wanted to honor Ms. Brown with their Urban Classic Honor Award for her White Lines series. Although she won’t be able to receive the award in person, we still want to honor her at the AAMBC Awards gathering.

In this time of profound loss, let us remember the joy and inspiration Tracy Brown brought into our lives. May her remarkable talent, kindness, and unwavering commitment to storytelling serve as a guiding light for all who carry on her legacy. Tracy, thank you for sharing your extraordinary gift with the world. Your words will continue to resonate and inspire for eternity.
