Single Review: Edie Yvonne’s ‘Queen Bee’ is an Alt-Pop Triumph from a Young Artist at the Top of Her Game

14-year-old singer Edie Yvonne delivers possibly her best song yet with the ultra-fresh new track ‘Queen Bee.’ With each new release, the LA-based star shows fans, critics, and haters why you shouldn’t underestimate her despite her youth.

Edie Yvonne has recently released her new single, ‘Queen Bee,’ as she continues to show why she’s a serious force in pop music despite emerging onto the scene just over 12 months ago.

The 14-year-old singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles has released six songs in 2023 alone. This forms part of her commitment at the start of this year to keep dropping new music every month. Most of Edie’s songs have become instant hits, with fans of the artist latching on to tracks like ‘In The Rain,’ ‘Stain,’ and ‘On Your Mind.’

Despite her age, Edie has already spent much of her life in the entertainment industry. In 2016, at just seven years old, Edie starred in the short film Kitty, directed by Chloe Sevigny. She later went on to star in the short films Lola: Girl Got A Gun and At Ease.

But it’s fair to say that Edie has been able to develop herself more through her music than through any other artistic medium. Songs like ‘Queen Bee’ are a perfect example of Edie’s accomplishments as an artist. The song’s intro is led by a synth and bass line (already setting this track apart from Edie’s previous songs, which are more downtempo and atmospheric). This gives way to two minutes of catchy hooks, dance grooves, and lyrics that rattle in your head long after the track has played out.

Lyrically, ‘Queen Bee’ is about lies, jealousy, mean girls, friendships going sour, and how subtle grievances lead to people turning against each other. Conceptually, the song is about much more than that. As with other Edie Yvonne songs, ‘Queen Bee’ is about the teenage condition. It’s about the social hierarchies that form between teenagers. It’s about what happens when someone is the “Queen Bee” but then gets toppled from that position and relegated to “B list.” It’ll ring true with just about anyone who has ever gone through high school…

Regarding her music, Edie explains that these intricately written tracks don’t come quickly: “I write lyrics all day and carry around songwriting journals wherever I go. I also use lots of voice memos.” She adds that it becomes a collaborative process: “I’ll pound out music on a guitar or keyboard. I’ll share it with my producers, and we will collaborate in the studio to map it out.”

For those who want to hear what Edie Yvonne has to offer next, she has stated that she’s currently working on a debut album called Girl Code (as well as a single of the same name). She has also teased that she plans to make a companion short film to her song ‘Queen Bee,’ which focuses on “mean girls and their minions.”
