Boldy James talks ‘House of Blue’ and attending SXSW this year

Boldy James () is a  blue-collar Detroit rapper who turned heads last year with his Consignment, Favor For A Favor: The Redi-Rock Mixtape and collaborations with The Alchemist and The Cool Kids, and announces debut project the Grand Quarters EP, due March 5th on Decon.

The EP, a lead-in to an Alchemist-produced LP later this year, is titled after a once bustling and illustrious Detroit night spot that fell into disrepair, a beacon of blight whose reference is used as a reminder of neglected majesty and the work ethic it takes to overcome at any cost.

The Hype Magazine had the opportunity to speak with the Mass Appeal artist about his upcoming project “House of Blues”, why he decided to sign with Mass Appeal instead of reaching out to Eminem and Shady Records being that he is from Detroit.  In addition, he speaks about where his musical background comes from and even wanting to provide a safe space for young adolescents with a partnership with the Public Athletic League.  The full interview Boldy James can be seen below!

Growing up what was your musical background?

My grandmother was part of a group called “The Bondage Review”. She and my uncle Angelo were signed to Motown Records back in the day. In addition, my grandfather used to play the drums and the saxophone. I have always had a musical influence group up through my family, but when the hip-hop scene began to really present itself, I started rapping at the age of 8 or 9 years old.  As far as a producer, I began making beats at the age of 6.  I was trying to perfect my craft to make sure it was my best body of work before presented to someone and it wouldn’t get rejected by others.

Do you still make your own beats our you have a team of producers you work with now?

I have my own group of in-house producers like the Winners Circle. So, not only am I getting A1 production I am also fortunate enough to land great brand visibility opportunities, based off the strength of the team I have around me.

Being that you are a native of Detroit did you try to reach out to Eminem before sign to Mass Appeal?

I did not try to reach out to Eminem because it was too far fetch. I’m not saying it was impossible, but it would have had to make sense to Eminem from a business sense to Eminem from a business sense to Eminem from a business sense to Eminem from a business standpoint. Now when I’m able to present something in the future, I would be honored to be able to work with somebody of caliber in the studio.

So, you just released your new single “Maserati Rick,” What was your inspiration and how long did it take you to write it?

I have been working with super producer “Go Grizzly” and he has been my mentor through the whole “House of Blues” and he has been able to help me reach my full potential as an artist.  Grizzly will not just let you turn in anything and I respect him for that because it brings out the best quality of work.

What is something you try to improve as an artist every day?

Beat selection, my topics of discussion, and trying to keep up with current events to speak on issues through my music and for the individuals who don’t have the platform to voice their opinions.

Being that you were born in Atlanta, what do you think the Atlanta Falcons need to focus on the most headed into the next season?

I was cheering for the Patriots to win the Superbowl and when everyone thought it was over something told that they were going to come back. Tom Brady had been there before and played with something prove knowing that he had his back against the wall. As for what the Falcons will need to improve on for next year is to finish what they started and not have the pedal to the medal in one half and coast in the second half. That is what ultimately lost the Superbowl! We have a saying in our neighborhood have you ever seen Daniel son beat Mr. Miyagi?

What are some of your entrepreneurial goals outside of the entertainment business?

I want to own a couple restaurants, successful music company, and create a space for the children by partnering with the Public Athletic League.

If you had to start over from scratch today how would you get your brand to the masses?

Keep making music and putting it out because eventually, it will catch on

Every artist is looking to deliver some type a message to the public. What is your message you want the public to get from your music?

Do what I say and not as I do. It is the same philosophy I tell my kids and you always want to make sure a great impression with your music or anything you do in life.

Who are some of the artists you would like to work with in the future?

Eminem, Rihanna, Beyonce, Nicki, Yo Gotti, Drake, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Future, Jay Critch, Gucci Mane

What can we expect from the House of Blue?

It will feature a lot more commercial songs on the project than people rhyming and flowing, but the commercial songs what keeps your viewers and the fan base.

What else can we expect from you this year that you can speak on?

We will be attending SXSW this year, last year I had a blast and I am hoping for the same this year.
