‘The Shadow Effect’-Interview with director Amariah Olson

“The Shadow Effect” focuses Dr. Reese (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who is obsessed with gene regeneration, and enthralled by the phenomenon of the waking dream.

Dr. Reese explores the psyche of Gabriel Howarth (Cam Gigandet), which turns his life upside down when his violent dreams begin to blend with reality. Gabriel’s dreams began to show political assassinations, giving him no choice but to save himself, his wife Brinn (Britt Shaw), and stop an experimental government program before time runs out.

The Hype Magazine had the opportunity to chat with director Amariah Olson about the film and projects that are in the works.

The Hype Magazine: How did you get involved with “The Shadow Effect?”

Amariah Olson: We were looking for another movie to green light and we had several scripts we were looking at. With this one, we previously considered producing and we came back to it and said ‘I think we’re ready to do this, I think it’s interesting, I like the concept, I see a lot of potential in it so let’s options script it’. We kind of went back to the drawing board on the structure of the script with another writer. We wanted to amp it out with some of the characters and have dramatic character scenes. We commenced to rewrite on it. It took about six weeks and when that was finished, we were ready to go into production on it

The Hype Magazine: How long did production take?

Olson: Pre-production and production took about three months and post production took almost a year. It was a very tedious process.

The Hype Magazine: What was your favorite part of filming?

Olson: My favorite part was doing second unit stuff. Most of the actors were really just out there doing their thing. Within the first five minutes of the movie before building explodes, that was second unit so that was really a lot of fun

The Hype Magazine: What was the most challenging part?

Olson: Moving too many locations over a short amount of time with a decent size crew, all of the transportation, and the logistics of changing almost a location every day, sometimes two locations per day. In an action movie, there’s just a lot of cameras set up. That was one of the biggest challenges.

The Hype Magazine: What are 5 things people don’t know about you?

Olson: I never went to school. I’ve never had a real job, I’ve only made movies. Self-made, self-taught. I came from making small, home videos when I started in animation. I do the master mixes on all our films.

The Hype Magazine: What other projects do you have coming up?

Olson: I’m almost done with a new film called “Body of Sin.” Just shot it off the coast of Georgia. It’s a female in jeopardy, diamond-heist thriller. It’s little more of a different angle than our previous films in terms of the content style. We’ve done a lot of darker films from a script, character, and visual standpoint. The thing that audiences expect from our movies is being very bright and it’s all shot in the daytime. I’m going through distribution pretty soon.

“The Shadow Effect” was released on-demand, digital HD, and DVD on May 2, 2017.
