Written by: Julz Mancini

With diversity surrounding each and every one of us on a daily basis, keeping an open mind and ear to our environments are major components in our growth as individuals. Between different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, religion, and even music, there are so many ways to broaden our horizons. There have been songs sung in foreign languages in which I could not understand. However, the beat or the emotion in the artist’s voice compelled me to search for the meaning of the song; provoked me to learn more about the artist. Throughout my childhood and into adulthood, I have also been fascinated by the Latino culture and music. Embracing friends who were Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican, and more, I was invited into their world where I became eager to study their styles of music and dance. While listening to Angie K, I noticed she displays a beautiful combination of Latin and R&B music to her listeners which enticed me to learn more about her as a creator.

As the niece of “Los Kenton”, a prestigious merengue band in the Dominican Republic, Angie K had music intertwined in her DNA. With a music idol in the family, she quickly grew a love for singing. As time went on, Angie K developed a unique sound to call her own. After the release of a mambo electronico single, “De Moda”, doors began to open for Angie. As her single ignited the club scene, “De Moda” climbed to the top of the Latin record pools in the USA while also being featured in the “DJ Times”. Being one of the few Latin artists to have the honor of performing in Honolulu, Hawaii, Angie K has had the pleasure of opening up for artists such as, Leslie Grace, Vena, Freddy Kenton Jr., Tego Calderon, La Obra, and Bachata Heights, to name a few. Attending and performing in festivals has furthered her experience as an artist, blessing the stage at 116th Festival, the Dominican Parade in NYC, and the Winter Music Conference in Miami. Not only is Angie K a solo artist but she had the opportunity to be a background vocalist for Lorena Rojas in her final album titled, “Hijos Del Sol”. As Angie’s resume expands, the request for her presence escalates.

With the demand for Angie K increasing, she has released a new single titled, “6 Shots”. This R&B song has a soft cadence with strong lyrics. “You was playin’ games for a minute. Who is you kidding? How you gonna break the rules and think you winning? Then you quit and beggin’ me to let you stay.” Bringing a realistic story to the ears of her fans, Angie K expresses the games she has been subjected to and the impact it had on her emotions. Many listeners can relate to a song like “6 Shots” as the majority of individuals have fallen victim to lies, manipulation, and heartbreak while eagerly attempting to numb the pain.

It is crucial for artists to express the realities of life in their music as it may potentially assist others through a difficult time. Many turn to music for numerous reasons such as, longing to numb an internal pain, to face their own realities, or to party and let loose. It is apparent that Angie K is capable of creating music that will appeal to a multitude of audiences due to her eclectic capabilities. As she proceeds to reach higher peaks, success is certainly in her reach!
