BET’s ‘Sistas’ Actor Brian Jordan Jr. Talks Filming an Entire Season During Pandemic, Who’s the Biggest Joker on Set and More

Sistas on BET follows a group of single Black women from different walks of life who bond over their one common thread: why am I single? The women navigate their “complicated love life” status, careers, and friendship through the ups-and-downs of living in a modern world of social media and unrealistic relationship goals.

The second season of Tyler Perry’s hit show Sistas returned to BET on Wednesday, October 14, and star actor, Brian Jordan Jr., who portrays the hilarious character “Maurice Webb” weighs in on what it was like to film an entire season during the COVID pandemic, what his character brings to the fabric of the show, discusses his love of art AND who are the biggest jokers on the set of the acclaimed series!

At the end of Season 2, fans were left on a cliff-hanger as the state of Jordan’s character, “Maurice Webb”, who was left in the hospital after being a victim of a hate crime related to the character’s sexuality.

The Hype Magazine got Brian to weigh in on a few things!

From the outside looking in, describe the actor Brian Jordan!

From the outside looking in, Brian is “Mr-Do-It-All!” (LOL) and is a southern boy who loves art, and has a huge passion for anything forward moving in the interest of African American progression. He is a former athlete, turned actor, writer, singer, dancer and the list goes on. He values family and does what he can to be a better person everyday… well, at least tries. Haha

Was there a defining moment that brought you to the entertainment industry as a career?

Yes, I was attending college in Baton Rouge, Louisiana when that defining moment happened. Debbie Allen came to do a residency for inner-city kids and I jumped at the opportunity. It turned out to be a training ground that would set me up to move to NYC for grad school and start my career—I’ve been “jumpin’” ever since.

You play Maurice Webb on Tyler Perry’s acclaimed series “Sistas” what does that role mean for you?

The privilege of playing Maurice means so many things to me, but most important is what it means to other people. The blessing of being cast in this role has shown me so much happiness through the way the viewers enjoy Maurice, and how they wait to see what’s next with him. It’s honestly a dream.

What does your character bring to the fabric of the show?

I believe Maurice brings joy to the fabric of the show. In any situation, we can count on him to make our heart’s smile! Sistas is a drama and Maurice being a comedic convention is so important as we can relate to drama in our real lives, and Maurice gives us some balance.

What’s the most satisfying for you about playing Maurice?

Honestly, I think I’m most satisfied with the creative collaboration that TP (Tyler Perry) allows when it comes to Maurice and the artistic playground from it. I enjoy disobeying the newness and nuance of Maurice every time I’m honored to play.

This past season was filmed during the pandemic, what was that like?!

It was extremely unique! It’s hard to describe it in words but what I will say is it was something that gave me inspiration. The first American primetime show back in production during the pandemic was my show! A Black show created by a Black man, and shot (in a successful quarantine bubble) on the lot of a Black film studio. That’s BOSS!

How did you maintain your motivation working under these circumstances?

To know the sacrifices of everyone there—people leaving their families to be there to make it work, knowing how hard it was for everyone learning of family members being infected with the virus, to learning of family and friends passing away— it was almost mandatory that I went hard!

Who’s the biggest joker on the set?

Honestly, everyone has their moments in this cast! We are so much like a family that it’s crazy! I must say that Devale, Chido, and Mignon keep me crying of laughter!

What do you think the biggest takeaway was from this season?

I truly believe the biggest takeaway from this season, especially for Maurice’s journey, is “Listen, Learn, Live” which basically means: As we make mistakes or go through a tough time, it’s in those moments that we grow the most. We must take the time to listen to all of the things that have driven us to the place that we are unhappy or frightens us. Let’s use it to learn to do better and then simply live better.

Tell us about your passions outside of acting!

I love ART! Everything about it is my passion from visual art (painting, drawing, muraling) to writing, music, culinary art, fashion, poetry, and filmmaking. EVERYTHING!

Any guidance for up and comers in the industry?

My advice to up and comers in the industry is to stay true to who you are and always train! Go to every class you can because you can always learn something valuable.
