Vanessa Rubio On Filming “Cobra Kai,” Upcoming Projects & More

A continuation of the Karate Kid film series, Cobra Kai has been one of the most popular streaming-based reboots over the last few years. A true favorite in the Paltrowitz household, my wife and I watched Cobra Kai when it originally premiered as a YouTube Original, then rewatched it again recently since the series moved to Netflix; Season 3 premiered on January 1, 2021.

One of the most universally-liked characters on Cobra Kai has proven to be Carmen Diaz, as portrayed by Vanessa Rubio. The Carmen character is central to Cobra Kai as the mother of one of the show’s main characters Miguel and a neighbor of protagonist Johnny Lawrence. Without giving away much of the plot-points from the first 3 seasons of Cobra Kai, Carmen regularly serves as a voice of reason amidst most other characters’ chaos, almost always showing a comforting, natural smile.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Vanessa Rubio on January 5, 2021 via Zoom, as embedded below. We discussed the new season of Cobra Kai, future plans for the show, projects outside of Cobra Kai and interests outside of acting.
