0Vanessa Carlton On The Re-Release Of Her 2020 Album “Love Is An Art,” COVID-19 Life & More
Almost 20 years ago singer and songwriter Vanessa Carlton released her debut single “A Thousand Miles,” which quickly soared to the top of the Billboard charts and garnered multiple Grammy nominations. Commercial success aside, Carlton has stayed in the eyes of music listeners around the world as an in-demand collaborator. This has included work alongside Stevie Nicks, My Morning Jacket’s Patrick Hallahan, T. Hardy Morris, Deer Tick and Counting Crows. Carlton reached yet another audience in the Summer of 2019 when she made her Broadway debut as Carole King in Beautiful.
In March 2020, right around the time that the COVID-19 pandemic hit the States, Vanessa Carlton released a new album entitled Love Is An Art. Produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Flaming Lips, OK Go), the album received rave reviews from Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and NYLON alike. 1 year after its initial release, Love Is An Art will be released as a “Deluxe Version” on March 26, 2021 via Dine Alone Records. In turn, it includes 2 demos and the B-side “Break to Save,” beyond the full-length’s original tracklisting; music videos for 2 of the album’s 11 tracks are embedded below.
On March 23, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Vanessa Carlton via Zoom, as also embedded below. We spoke about Love Is An Art, her journey, how she feels about Terry Crews’ take on “A Thousand Miles,” life during COVID-19 and plenty more.
