Zeb Powell On Snowboarding With A$AP Ferg, Career Goals, Working With Red Bull, Music & More

After back-to-back Olympic qualifying contests in Aspen, recently snowboarding superstar Zeb Powell and 3 other Red Bull snowboarders (Mark McMorris, Luke Winkelmann, Jake Canter) met up with superstar A$AP Ferg and his crew to teach them how to snowboard and to have an important conversation about the importance of representation. This meet-up was spearheaded by Powell himself, who made headlines in 2019 when he became the first black athlete to ever win gold at Winter X Games. What came from the experience was an awesome day of spring snowboarding alongside a pretty incredible, earnest conversation about what it means to be a trailblazer in your craft, whether it be music or sport, and why representation and inclusivity matters.

Ironically, the first time Zeb Powell went snowboarding, he hated it. In his words: “I was with this really mean instructor who kept making me ride regular. When I finally went back with a friend I saw a little box below the lift. I hit that box on my very first run, stuck it and was totally hooked from then on.” Since those early days at Cataloochee Ski Area, Powell has kept his focus on riding with creativity, flow and style. His 5-year plan? “I definitely want to be filming a lot, I love how creative and free it is, but I also love the competitive side of snowboarding… I just really like being creative and smooth.”

On May 27, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Zeb Powell via Zoom, as embedded below. Besides his recent meet-up with A$AP Ferg and a rumored upcoming meeting with Lil Uzi Vert, we spoke about Powell’s career goals, his work with Red Bull, conditioning, music and plenty more. Additional information on Powell can be found by clicking here, here, here and here.
