0Ximena Sariñana On Writing Music For The New Tribeca-Screened Film “On The Divide,” Future Career Plans & More
As premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, On The Divide follows the story of 3 Latinx people living in McAllen, Texas who, despite their views, are connected by the most unexpected of places: the last abortion clinic on the U.S./Mexico border. As threats to the clinic and their personal safety mount, these 3 individuals are forced to make decisions they never could have imagined. The film chronicles their actions during the shadow of the Trump administration, the storytelling bolstered by an empathetic lens and an authentic concern for spotlighting the assault on reproductive rights.
On The Divide — which premiered today at Brooklyn Commons at MetroTech, was directed by Maya Cueva (The Provider, Ale Libre) and Leah Galant (Death Metal Grandma, The Provider). The film was produced by Diane Becker (Tina, Inventing Tomorrow), Melanie Miller (Inventing Tomorrow, Equal), Amanda Spain (Television Event, Pray Away), and Elizabeth Woodward (The Great Hack, Afterward) It features an original song by Ximena Sariñana, “Aqui No Hay Pena,” who attended that premiere.
The aforementioned Ximena Sariñana is a GRAMMY-nominated recording artist who made her major label debut with 2008’s Mediocre, which sold more than 100,000 copies in Mexico alone. Prior to finding success as a musician, Sariñana was an award-winning actress, making her on-screen debut before she was a teenager. Her most recent full-length was 2019’s ¿Dónde Bailarán Las Niñas?, while several new songs — solo and collobrative — have already been released by Sariñana this year.
On June 13, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ximena Sariñana via Zoom, as embedded below. Besides On The Divide, we spoke about Sariñana’s creative process, future recording plans and prior studies at the Berklee College Of Music. More on Sariñana can be found here, here, here and here.
