Ida Mae’s Christopher Turpin & Stephanie Jean On The New “Click Click Domino” Album, Moving To Nashville, Future Plans & More

For nearly 2 straight years following the release of their critically-acclaimed debut Chasing Lights, husband and wife duo Ida Mae lived on the road, touring alongside the likes of Willie Nelson, Allison Krauss, Marcus King and Greta Van Fleet. When it came time to record a followup to Chasing Lights, Ida Mae planned on working once again with legendary producer Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Laura Marling, Kings of Leon), who had helmed Chasing Lights back in their native England. However, with COVID-19 taking international travel off the table, Ida Mae’s Christopher Turpin and Stephanie Jean decided to go ahead and make the record themselves, leaning on everything they’d learned working with Johns and other top-shelf producers over the years like T Bone Burnett (Elvis Costello, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss), M. Ward (She & Him), Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile), Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes) and Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys).

Working out of their house in Nashville, the duo set up a series of bare bones recording stations and began cutting tracks together in 1 or 2 take performances. The result of that is Click Click Domino, as due out on July 16, 2021 via Thirty Tigers. This new album follows the release of Ida Mae’s highly-praised 2020 EP Raining For You, which was acclaimed by Rolling Stone, Guitar World and Wide Open Country alike. In support of Click Click Domino, Ida Mae will be performing at this year’s Newport Folk Festival on July 23rd, as followed by confirmed dates around the U.S. and U.K. in the months to follow.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ida Mae’s Christopher Turpin and Stephanie Jean on June 25, 2021 about Click Click Domino, life during COVID-19, future plans, influences and plenty more via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Ida Mae can be found by clicking here, here and here.
