Young Devyn: Making Her-Story

Tell me your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it actually all begin for Young Devyn?

I started doing music around seven going on eight. It went from singing in school talent shows, to getting booked for actual shows, to being the voice of the youth for Caribbean kids at that time.

Now where exactly do you hail from? And growing up there, who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

I’m from East New York in Brooklyn, representing Trinidad and Tobago. My strongest musical influences come from my background. Everything about it; from my Caribbean melodies to my Brooklyn grittiness.

At what particular point in time did you even opt to pursue music on a professional level?

It happened organically. I had to catch up with my own life. I was getting booked for shows before I even considered myself an artist.

That being said, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?

The everyday youngin’! I think the relatability my music holds goes a long way and reaches people around the world.

The masses first became more familiar with you from your stand out appearance on the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher — How did you even land this opportunity (coveted spot)?

BET reached out and within a week I was in L.A. shooting the cypher. The opportunity was something I couldn’t pass up, and definitely helped solidify me in the rap game which I’m beyond grateful for.

Your lead single / video is entitled, “Straight To It” — Tell me about this particular track? How did it come to fruition?

It was originally a freestyle for Instagram, but because of how fast it was growing I capitalized off of the momentum and turned it into a full song.

Baby Goat is a 4th & Broadway (iconic label) project — What particular string of events led to this inking?

My manager had a relationship with Latrice, and she took interest into me after he told her about me. When the timing was right, we linked up and now 4th & Broadway is my home.

What do you feel you bring to the music industry that we don’t already have in other performers?

Relatability. For females to make it in the game, you either gotta be super tough or overly sexual. I wanna show that it’s okay to just be yourself all around.

Have you encountered any problems in getting to this point in your career?

There’s always ups and downs, but that comes with any dream. I try to ignore it and stay consistent through it all.

What do you want people to get from your music?

My story. Not many people make it out of where I’m from…so if I could use my story to relate and motivate at least one person to chase their dreams, then I’m good.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Meek Mill! No explanation needed. Just know when that day comes it’s gonna be legendary.

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

Madison Square Garden or the Barclays (Center). They’re iconic venues in my city.

One track of yours that you think defines you and why?

“Realer Than This” gives an overview of my life, my feelings, and my hopes to where I wanna be in the future.

In terms of longevity, what do you feel it is that will continue to sustain you in this grueling industry?

My versatility. My ability to adapt to any beat, flow and melody, while still being and sounding like myself.

Do you have any other outside / additional future aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

I definitely wanna have a label and sign two artists I can lock in with, change their lives, and make them superstars.

To date, what has been your biggest career moment, at least thus far anyway?

The release of “Straight To It“ changed everything for me. Everyone in the city is watching, and now that I have their attention it’s time to shake things up!

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

Definitely with some platinum albums under my belt. In 10 years, I’ll probably be on an island with my family catching vibes and working on music as always.

As for the immediate, what’s next for Young Devyn?

An upcoming project is on the way!

Any “closing” thought(s) for our readers?
