0Rodrigo Santoro On The New Netflix Film “7 Prisoners,” The Craft Of Acting, Favorite Bands & More
In the new film 7 Prisoners — out now in U.S. theaters and available globally on Netflix on November 11, 2021 — 18-year-old Mateus (played by Christian Malheiros) hopes to provide a better life for his working-class family in the countryside. Accepting a new job in São Paolo, he is shuttled into the city with a handful of other teenage boys from his town, unaware of what awaits them: exhausting work in a scrapyard and their identity cards seized by a vicious taskmaster and exploiter Luca (played by Rodrigo Santoro), who threatens them with the unthinkable if they try to escape. But as Mateus learns, even the boss has a boss. And if he wants to find a way out, what will he have to become? The film is the second feature from writer-director Alexandre Moratto (Sócrates), who confirms his status as a major new voice of Brazilian cinema, and was an “Official Selection” at 2021’s Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
The aforementioned Rodrigo Santoro has been working steadily for decades both internationally and in his native Brazil. Santoro’s major film roles include his portrayal of Persian King Xerxes in the movie 300 and its sequel 300: Rise Of An Empire, beyond acting in Carandiru, Love Actually, Che, I Love You Phillip Morris, Ben-Hur and Rio. Within the television realm, Sanoto appeared on the television series Lost portraying the character Paulo, in Women Love as Diogo Nogueira, and on HBO’s Westworld as Hector Escaton.
On November 8, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rodrigo Santoro via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Santoro, 7 Prisoners and other new projects of his can be found by clicking here, here and here.
