0LP On The New Album “Churches,” Songwriting, Future Career Plans, David Lee Roth & Much More
Singer and songwriter LP first rose to international fame with 2017’s Lost On You. The album’s hit title track — which reached the No. 1 chart spot in 18 countries and has surpassed over 2 billion streams (and counting) — was certified Diamond in Mexico and France, 4x Platinum in Italy, Platinum in Greece and Poland, and Gold in Belgium and Switzerland. However, LP is far from an overnight success, scoring their first major label record deal over 15 years before “Lost On You” struck a chord.
LP — who announced their singing with Canadian record label Dine Alone Records last year — has also found global success as a songwriter for other artists. In turn, their discography also includes plenty of icons and multi-platinum-sellers, including Cher (“Red,” “Pride”), Rihanna (“Cheers, Drink To That”), The Backstreet Boys (“Love Will Keep You Up All Night”), Leona Lewis (“Fingerprint”), Céline Dion (“Change My Mind”), Cher Lloyd (“Human”), Rita Ora (“Shine Ya Light”) and Christina Aguilera (“Beautiful People”).
Churches is the latest album from LP, as scheduled for release on December 3, 2021; touring in support of Churches is set to kick off in January 2022 in Europe. Its 15-song tracklisting includes “Goodbye” — the album’s fourth single — as co-written with long-time collaborators Mike Del Rio (who produced and played all instruments except drums) and Nate Campany, who are also the writing team behind singles “The One That You Love” and “How Low Can You Go.” In addition to tracks produced by the aforementioned Del Rio and Campany, Churches includes production contributions by Kyle Shearer (Becky G, Tove Lo, Carly Rae Jepsen), Lars Stalfors (Health, Local Natives, Cold War Kids), 2-time Grammy winner Dan Wilson (Adele, Pink, Leon Bridges, James Bay), Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Carly Rae Jepsen, Sky Ferreira) and Isabella Machine Summers (Florence & The Machine). The album was mastered by multi-Grammy winner Emily Lazar (HAIM, The Killers, Vampire Weekend, Coldplay).
On October 22, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with LP again via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Churches, we spoke about their New York roots, their creative process, Van Halen, future career plans and plenty more. More on LP can be found by clicking here, here, here, here and here.
