Zach Tabori Releases Experimental Rock Album ‘Soft Boiled’

Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer ZACH TABORIdebuts his brand new prog-rock album SOFT BOILED today, January 19th via Flesh Fury. The eight-song enigma ranges from trash rock to orchestral to a cheeky ballad and even includes a shredding Turkish Saz slicing through a punk track. Written and produced solely by Tabori, this album exudes a sound that can be described as if Mars Volta had a baby with Frank Zappa with a sprinkle of Sly and the Family Stone.

The album begins with “A Wholesome 21st Century Introduction” featuring a group of New York transplants who were persuaded to leave their post-dinner drinks at Cafe Stella to air their grievances over musical accompaniment. “Entideologue” pokes at those entranced by the LA social bubble who enjoy their own company a little too much… one may suggest that they might lack the thing that rational folks think is quite important…PERSPECTIVE. “And for the record, I see the irony of a fellow LA dweller writing this song but whatever…that’s show biz baby!” States Tabori.

The next three songs (No Disgrace, Unchecked Desire, and CLAO) lean towards the aggressive, introducing a dystopian scenario in a post-World War III society with energetic overtones. “Unchecked Desire” transitions into the lust for rebellion and rising up against oppressive forces (with some shred, obviously). Finally, “CLAO” is about the misadventures of a character in this dystopian world. “The song features an homage to the Turkish folk music that I grew up listening to and I even played the Saz over the guitar melody,” explains Tabori.

Next up is the single “Get Out (I’m Ready)” which is all about going out and getting laid. The funky disco meets rock-pop song was featured on Guitar World and on Spotify’s New Noise playlist. “Contrapuntal Runt” is an experimental piece blending rock, a funky clavinet, experimental synthesis, and a string ensemble. “Each album I work on, I try to push myself musically and do something that I haven’t done yet. In this case, the experiment was to create a very fast and complex piece of music that would be very difficult to perform.”

Finally, the album rounds out with a ballad “You Know You Just Want Me To Die”. “I ended the project with a ballad about people’s obsession with sharing lengthy obituaries about people they might have not known too well on Instagram. At this point, it appears that many people are so disconnected from personal relationships that they are almost more excited to post about somebody’s demise than to enjoy the present. Crucial synth solo to round it out…just because…” explains Tabori.

Tabori has worked with Frank Zappa’s former keyboardist Tommy Mars who is featured on the project and he also played and co-produced on the new ¿Téo?Album (Teo is going on tour with Justin Beiber this year). Tabori is featured on the single Buzzed ft Willow Smith which he played bass on and he played guitar and co-wrote songs for Kid Bloom’s albums as well.
