Eminem Now Eligible to be Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame CEO Greg Harris joined Audacy to talk about this year’s potential inductees shortly after the nominees were announced for the 2022 class.
Eminem as a nominee. “It’s his first. So you have to release a record 25 years ago to be eligible, and this is his first year of eligibility. When you think about the shadow he’s cast, in the last 20 years, how impactful he is, he’s nominated in his first year of eligibility.”
Process for Hall of Fame inductees. “A little while ago we announced our nominees for the class of 2022…We announce the ballot, and later on this spring we’ll announce who’s elected, we’ll celebrate them next fall with the induction ceremony, concert, and broadcast. We have 17 new nominees, it’s an incredible list— 10 have been nominated before, seven first-time nominees. There’s artists here for every single person no matter what genre you like…The foundation has been doing this for 30+ years. About 28 of us met, every person in the meeting nominates two…That group votes in a series of votes. This is a long meeting, like a four hour meeting, then narrows it down to a ballot that’s manageable and this ballot of 17 is what comes out of that meeting. This ballot goes out to about a voting body of about 1,000 which is all the other living inductees, so James Hetfield votes, and Smokey Robinson votes, and Bruce Springsteen votes, [etc]…and when it all comes back the top five vote-getters are elected into the Hall of Fame.”
“Frequently when bands are inducted, they get together, and they get on our stage. It goes all the way back to [Cream] coming together, where they hadn’t played together in 20 years, and they got together at our event. We had [Paul] McCartney and Ringo in 2018, or 2015 for Ringo’s induction, on stage together, performing together. Stuff like that happens at our place, it’s magical…Seeing Metallica backing Ozzy Osbourne, that was off the charts. Moments like that happen every year.”
