0Sonita Henry On The New Acorn TV Series “The Chelsea Detective,” Her Stand-Up Days In New York, Future Projects, Music & More
AMC Networks’ Acorn TV is North America’s largest streaming service, as known for its premium, well-curated British and international television. Acorn TV’s recent slate is comprised of critically-acclaimed commissioned and original series, including popular New Zealand detective series My Life Is Murder (Lucy Lawless), acclaimed Irish crime thriller Bloodlands (James Nesbitt, co-executive produced by Jed Mercurio), British crime drama Whitstable Pearl (Kerry Godliman), Emmy-nominated Queens Of Mystery, Kiwi romantic dramedy Under The Vines, British detective drama Dalgliesh (Bertie Carvel), and the hit Miss Fisher spinoff Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, to name a few of its successes.
The new Acorn TV Original series The Chelsea Detective debuted in the U.S. and Canada yesterday, on March 7, 2022, and new episodes of the contemporary, four-part UK drama will premiere every Monday through March 28, 2022. Within the series, the death of a stonemason on the London Underground leads DI Arnold (played by Adrian Scarborough) into what seems at first like a real life haunting. The victim was a lonely, devout and troubled man who believed himself to be haunted by a spirit leaving him vengeful Biblical messages. Might a real-world explanation be found as they uncover the truth of his life — illicit drugs, bribery, broken family relationships and a man tormented by a terrible secret? Also on his team are partner and no-nonsense DS Priya Shamsie (played by Sonita Henry). research and tech queen DC Jess Lombard (played by Lucy Phelps), rookie officer DC Connor Pollock (played by Peter Bankolé), and brilliant, if occasionally daunting, Chief Forensics Officer Ashley Wilton (played by Sophie Stone, Shetland). The series was created and executive produced by Emmy Award-winning Peter Fincham, who worked on The Lost Prince, Smack The Pony and I’m Alan Partridge.
On February 24, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sonita Henry via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond The Chelsea Detective, we talked about upcoming projects, her days doing stand-up in New York, and musical preferences. More The Chelsea Detective can be found here, here and here.
