Celebrate Yourself, ‘Euphoria’ by Marxoxo Is THE New Anthem
Marxoxo is the bratty air-pop project of independent trans Filipina artist, Mar. Marxoxo’s writing pulls inspiration from personal drama, dreams, and diaries, snuggling lightly between the hyper pop of Charli XCX and the innocence of Britney Spears. But more than that, it’s a juxtaposition of identities, reconciling growing up in a humble hick town with proudly growing into herself.
Marxoxo’s latest project, 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘝 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, is a testament to their duality as the mini album chronicles romanticizing a toxic relationship and then grappling with its dire dynamics. With poignant and fun lyricism coupled with crisp production and features from Boy Sim, Sabby Sousa, and Nitrah Neon, 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘝 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 solidifies itself as a cult classic.
Marxoxo is a sought-after fixture in hyper pop, alternative, and LGBTQ+ scenes, performing regularly and curating their own Club XOXO concert series. They’ve also been featured by tastemaker indie blogs, TIDAL’s editorial We Are Everywhere playlist, Grindr’s New Music Frigay playlist, and Charli XCX’s “Charli” live tour, and recently performed at Sacramento Pride!
When Mar started writing Euphoria in 2020 with her producer ‘OHEY’, she had ‘Flowers’ by Sweet Female Attitude on constant repeat. Mar quotes, “ I loved how carefree it was and how the arrangement brought the vocals to soaring highs, so I carried that spirit with me going into it.”
Euphoria means many things – absurdly happy, gender euphoria, and of course, in the show Euphoria, Mar really wanted to fuse and capture its meaning in music.
Pride Month is coming to a close but pride is year-round! As a trans girl living in cisnormative patriarchy, living with pride and her head held high every day is necessary. “I want everyone to feel and fuel that energy within themselves, then nurture and celebrate it in each other. It’d be a shame to let the love run dry come July.”
