Big Chan [Formerly Of Doggy’s Angels]: Less Talk, More Work

Let’s hop right into this eagerly awaited new premier single, “Jump Back,” featuring David Banner — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?

“Jump Back” was re- released; I dropped this single in 2013, and back then streaming wasn’t as savvy as it is now and I felt it was a really good record so I am reintroducing it on all platforms. The record was basically hidden because another artist was using my name, and my team is taking care of it. How the song came about, I was in the studio and Banner came through…he liked the track and hopped on.

Of course “Jump Back” (hopefully) comes courtesy of your loomingly overdue debut solo collection — What all can you reveal and / or divulge about upcoming said body of work?

My album is definitely in the works; scheduled to be released early 2023…not sure if I will add “Jump Back.”

How then does this new material(s) either differ and / or compare to what your fans and followers already both know and love you for?

Well this will be a stretch because they’ve heard what I can do in groups, but not as a solo artist and there will be my truth and point of view.

What was it about now in 20-22 that prompted your decision to return to music?

The desire has always been there, but mentally I wasn’t in that space. I became a designer and that consumed me for a while, and now that the industry has changed I owe it to my fans who’ve been asking where I’ve been and where am I now.

That said, what all exactly had / have you been up to, both personally and professionally speaking, during this lengthy musical hiatus?

I’ve been designing clothes for some of the biggest celebrities in the game…taught myself how to sew, and I’ve been up and running ever since.

As a lyricist, when you sit down to pen your rhymes where do you draw your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from the track; 90% percent of the time once it speaks to me I talk back.

Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for Big Chan?

I was inspired by N.W.A., and as fate would have it my poetry writing days would pay off after being discovered by Eazy-E. That situation opened the door for me.

Now you’re a native of Los Angeles, CA, correct? So growing up in the “City of Angels,” who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

My mom was my musical influence.

In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?

Reality rap…as I move forward, it’s all relatable from my personal experiences.

What particular string of events actually led to your initial linking up with Coniyac & Kola and later uniting with Snoop Dogg ultimately forming Doggy’s Angels?

Snoop had a solo deal for me, and said he would sign me when the time was right; the first song I did was called “Hoodtraps,” with him, myself and Kokane. An audition was held because (he) wanted to form a group; they made the cut, and history was made.

Why exactly did the group eventually disband?

Egos and entitlement, lawsuits and lack of loyalty.

Switching gears here…

Longevity, what do you attribute yours to?

My longevity is my legacy; I’ve covered a lot of ground, and I’m just scratching the surface.

What do you want people to get from your music?

My truth, not just pussy talk. So many layers that something is going to inspire you. I may save a few souls…God’s will be done.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of Hip Hop? And, even more specifically, women in rap?

I’m happy more women are being heard and getting they bread, but I’m disappointed with subject matters as it doesn’t move the culture forward it (just) fits a narrative.

Do you have any other outside / additional aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?

Becoming a mom, through my tunnel or step kids.

To date, what has been your greatest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

Designing wardrobe for Prince!

What’s an average day like for you?

My day is filled with fittings, pattern drafting and designing. Introvert at best.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…

Im very down to earth; if it’s questions, I answer.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

The creative process. The egos and insecurities, not so much.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Know your worth, and be consistent.

Do you still remain in touch with both Coniyac & Kola? And, what are the chances / odds of a Doggy’s Angels reunion; whether on stage and / or wax?

No, and not likely. Respectfully.

Lastly, what’s next for Big Chan?

Next up is all finished product, that’s the best way that I can put that. Less talk, more work; that has always been my rule of thumb.

Is there anything I left out, or just plain forgot to mention? And, any “closing” thought(s) for our readers?

Lastly, always bet on YOU!
