The Hype Magazine’s international correspondent, Charles Myambo (CM) sat for an interview with Wale Turner (WT). Below are some excerpts from the interview.

Award Winning Artist – “Wale Turner”

CM: It goes without saying that you are one of the most versatile artists on the continent of Africa and you are gaining worldwide attention at an alarming rate. What is the secret behind your stellar success?

WT: First of all, I would say God is the secret behind everything. Secondly, I try as much as possible to be aware of whatever goes on around me, gets me ahead. It’s a journey and it’s still on. I pray to be greater and bigger than this.

CM: Who are some of those Nigerian stars you took inspiration from while developing your music career? Have you met other celebrities that have made you get star struck and instantly go into fan-mode?

WT: WELL, I would say I get inspired from good music and so called “bad music”. I try to find the good in everything no matter how bad they talk about it, or they make it seem. I am inspired by whoever is doing the right thing. Feel me?

CM: You rap, you sing, you perform, and you are a huge fan favorite. Is there anything you can’t do lol? You are clearly very ambitious and driven, so tell me where that drive and passion comes from?

WT: lol I’m doing what I love the most. Say no more

CM: At what age did you decide you were going to take music seriously and how did your family members and close friends respond to your aspirations? Where did you meet with resistance or support?

WT: I started music when I was around 16 or 17. You know the typical Nigerian parent would want you to focus on your studies and not do anything else lol. That said, I am thankful it all makes sense now

CM: One of my favorite songs from any artists is a song you produced sometime last year called “Own Your Sh#t”. Do you remember me telling you that at the time? What kind of creative process do you go through to come up with your master tracks?

WT: OWN YOUR SH#T is actually one of my favorite recorded songs. The beat led me to what I delivered on it. In my mind I was thinking of 2PAC n BIGGIE so they both inspired the song from A to Z. I told a story in the legendary style Haha.

CM: On a personal note. What are some of the most discouraging things you were told by “haters” and naysayers before you made it big? What would be your advice for upcoming artists on how to overcome adversity and negativity?

WT: I think Haters and naysayers add more gasoline to make you succeed. Growth and the process made me realize that. As an emerging act, stay positive. Keep your head up, stay prayerful, be humble. you will get there. Look at me, I started this journey some time ago. Thankful for growth and still going.
