Jay Chandrasekhar On Directing The New Jo Koy Film “Easter Sunday,” Future Broken Lizard Projects, His Novel & More

Starring acclaimed comedian Jo Koy as a man returning home for an Easter celebration with his loving and uproariously unpredictable family, Easter Sunday features riotous bickering, eating, drinking, laughing and loving reign supreme. Inarguably Koy’s love letter to his Filipino-American community, Easter Sunday features an all-star comedic cast, including Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley), Tia Carrere (True Lies, Wayne’s World), Brandon Wardell (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Tony Award nominee and Grammy Award winner Eva Noblezada (Broadway’s Hadestown), Lydia Gaston (Broadway’s The King & I), Asif Ali (WandaVision), Rodney To (Parks & Recreation), Eugene Cordero (The Good Place), Jay Chandrasekhar (I Love You, Man), Tiffany Haddish (Girl’s Trip) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire). The Blu-ray and DVD edition of the film — available on October 18, 2022 via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment — comes with 20+ minutes of exclusive content. This includes a gag reel, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and commentary with director Jay Chandrasekhar and Jo Koy.

If you have been watching comedic films and/or television over the last 20-something years, then you have undoubtedly seen the work of the aforementioned Jay Chandrasekhar. Chandrasekhar first broke out in a big way as a member of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, which helmed the cult-favorite movies Super Troopers, Club Dread and Beer League. Chandrasekhar himself directed the major 2005 film The Dukes Of Hazzard, beyond episodes of Arrested Development, Psych, Community, Happy Endings, New Girl, The Goldbergs, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Fresh Off The Boat. In turn, Chandrasekhar has been steadily working for decades as an actor, stand-up comedian, writer, producer and director.

On October 17, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jay Chandrasekhar via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Easter Sunday, we spoke about his multi-faceted career and his upcoming novel. More on Chadrasekhar and his various projects can be found online by clicking here, here and here.
