Exploring the Alta Moda/Casa Miami Takeover

Dolce & Gabbana spent the last part of November and early December in temperate Miami as it offered the world another Alta Moda celebration: Alta Moda/Casa Miami Takeover. At this event, which was full of elegant presentations, the brand brought a focus on fashion for women and men, watchmaking, jewelry and interiors, with an emphasis on Latin culture.

What Is Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda?

Of course, Miami wasn’t the first stop for D&G’s Alta Moda celebrations. Rather, Alta Moda, which translates to high fashion, is an annual event that was first held in Taormina in 2012. Dominique Dolce has said that the purpose of Alta Moda/Casa Miami, as with the other Altas, is to help showcase and preserve the artisanal fatto a mano way of working from traditional bottegas.

What Is Fatto a Mano?

Fatto a mano is the concept and act of making unique clothing by hand. All of the 100 looks that were presented at Alta Moda/Casa Miami were made by hand. Dominique Dolce pointed to the fact, with pride, that this work was done by working with cross-generational teams. He sees Alta Moda as an opportunity for the traditional to flourish, via young hands, into the future. As Miami is renowned for its youthful vigor, the city was a fine choice for D&G’s traveling show.

Why Was Miami a Good Destination for Dolce & Gabbana?

Miami is known as the Magic City. It is a beacon for glitz and glamour and it is also a kind of crossroads of culture. It’s the North American city where American and Latin culture mix, mingle and inspire one another. Dolce has spoken about how similar Latin culture is to his own Sicilian origins and how he considers it to be very close to the D&G brand.

Dolce & Gabbana recognizes Miami as a gateway into America for lots of people of Latin descent. The brand sees the similarities in that Latin culture establishing a foothold in America just as D&G did so decades ago, when they were chosen by Madonna to design costumes for her 1993 Girlie Show tour.

The brand also approaches Latin culture from an outsider’s perspective, pulling aspects of traditional dress, like a Flamenco’s polka dots, into their world. Just like D&G originally took the culture that existed on the southern Italian shores and proudly brought it to the world, so now they bring their new Latin-imbued lines to the world. Is there a better place to do so than Miami? They didn’t think so.

What Is the Future of Dolce & Gabbana?

Dolce & Gabbana’s future is as bright as its founders’ vision. One of the reasons that you’ll keep hearing the name referenced in pop culture and keep seeing the merchandise worn by the famous and elite is because of things like the Miami Takeover. Another reason is that both Dominique Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have an eye for creating things that are high-end and highly sought, but available to everybody. That is part of their unique gift as fashionistas.
